I like how he cuts up the carcass, Caroline! I always leave the saddle in one large piece, and the rib cage whole but with legs removed.

Nice blues, Jollys!

I have three responses so far. Two people looking for breeding trios, and one asking about meat. :)

Good ad! I've noticed the meat rabbits are on the rise here in GA. Someone took the plunge and was offering a rabbit butchering class not too long ago. That was nice to see :)

Very nicely written add :) I am sure you'll get the "Rabbits are not food and your a bad person" reaction. But I'm sure those people eat chicken full of medications and with thousnads jammed into a tiny shed. I am looking forward to producing a healthy meat supply. Even if my kids don't want to try it atleast the husband and I will. I have a list of things I want to do first. Like rabbit chili and rabbit jerky, BBQ rabbit(ok going to have to stop at that one before this turns into Bubba telling Forest all the ways you can cook shrimp :) )

I bravely posted an ad on CL in the hopes of earning a bit of cash toward upkeep of the bunnehs. :money: I posted pics of cute little wabbits, and then...

Meat. *GASP!*

Needless to say, I'm wondering what type of reaction I'll get.

I've had three responses so far- one definitely wants a trio for breeding, one may be interested in the same, and another wants to buy live to butcher, but wants a "refresher course". He is supposed to come tomorrow, but I haven't heard from him today. :?

Drive on up- I could use some help butchering, and you can take a bunch of meat in trade for your work! :p

Love the ad and the pix and glad you haven't been hearing from the tree huggers :)

Are there rules/regs from the USDA or whomever you need to abide by in order to sell dressed rabbits? I know around here for things like raw milk either from cows or goats, it can only legally be sold (other than from a licensed/inspected dairy) if it's for "animal consumption"...otherwise you have to buy a share...which IMO is quite ridiculous...if we were to do that we'd be paying about $10 a gallon.

LOL, we haven't even had our first breeding yet, but this might be something we could do to help offset the cost of feed...if it's legal and doesn't require a lot of fees for licensing and such.

That's a great add, MSD! :) It's nice to see you aren't getting flagged with this type of add, and it sounds like you are getting some great response!

I've got a question about the couple of plastic containers you show in the first photo.

1) The green jug appears to have feed in it. Is that your normal feed process, or is that there to creep-feed?
2) The 10-12inch black pots you have hanging. Are those just to give a rest area? Nest boxes? How did you attach them to the cage?
3) Do you have problems with your rabbits chewing on the plastics?

That was my creep feed method before I bought metal creep feeders. I still use them when I remove the nest so that the kits have a warm sheltered place to get off of the wire. Several of us believe that chilling contributes to weaning enteritis- I have never had a case here.

2) The 10-12inch black pots you have hanging. Are those just to give a rest area? Nest boxes? How did you attach them to the cage?

They are a rest area so the rabbits can get off of the wire. It is also good exercise for them to jump in and out. Here is my post showing how to hang them:

3) Do you have problems with your rabbits chewing on the plastics?

They will chew the plastic, but most don't do much damage. As long as they only swallow small pieces, the plastic will go through their system without any problems.

When you sell already butchered, do you include any organs or just the muscle on bone? Just curious. Neat add!

We include the organs unless the customer doesn't want them. If they don't want the organs, we save them because we have a restaurant who begs us for them.

I thought I had read that in Florida, we can only sell live Rabbits, unless affilated and inspected by the usda. Maybe something about they buy live and then if they ask you to butcher you can for free...thats how they get around it...Is that true? I've just had our first litter and so far it is only for out table....So I'm curious too.....Are you allowed to advertise as selling dressed meat? Or meat at all? Are regulations different per state or is it federal reg?

BTW...I have got to get me some beautiful REX rabbits.......OMGosh....:)

In CA, rabbits fall under the rules for poultry, but each county dictates if or how it can be sold... for instance, although state law allows sales from Farmer's Markets, my county does not permit it. I can only sell from the farm or by delivery to the purchaser's home.

Call your county extension agent and ask them what the regulations are for your county.

I think the rules/laws are a state/local thing. Here in KS I can sell stuff I raise (rabbits, eggs, meat, veggies) direct to the consumer provided they purchase it directly from me and either they pick it up or I deliver it to them. Think along the lines of a "Farmer's Market". As long as I keep it just between me and the consumer, I don't have to have the USDA or State Inspectors involved. If I want to sell to a restaurant or grocery store or some other kind of middle-person, then the butchering has to take place at a State-inspected processing plant or butcher shop.

Great ad, by the way. I post here on Craigslist - Meat Rabbits - and haven't had a single complaint. I don't sell dressed meat but have had several inquiries.

It was a great ad!

P.S Thanks for the input and direction on the regulations!
