I'm going Sunday to look at some mini rex does and I'm trying to stay with the self colors which I believe are black, blue and chocolate. If I were to get some of these what color buck should I be looking for? I mean if I were to breed a black buck with a chocolate doe, what, in theory, would I get? Also, some of these are broken as well. How bad does that mess up the mix? I really like the brokens and would like to go that route.

Black is dominant to chocolate and blue so unless the black has a hidden recessive chocolate or blue gene then the kits will be black.

Broken is in-completely dominant so one gene gives the proper amount of white and two genes creates a mostly white rabbit called 'Charlie's' and are not showable. A rabbit with two broken genes will always have broken kits and rabbits with one broken gene will statistically have 50% of their offspring broken.

That depends what the black buck carries. Since you don't know the recessives, it's easier to tell you what you won't get, you won't get any otters or agoutis.

You could get anything from lilac, chocolate, blacks, blues, REW, torts, harlies... you need to know the pedigree.

Broken only changes the color pattern, not the color itself. Mini Rex are accepted in broken in acceptable varieties.

Holy Crud!!! I'm trying to do my homework and be a responsible breeder as far as colors go. So maybe I should stay away from black altogether. She has Lilac, Chocolate, Broken Otter and Broken Black does. I was going to stay away from the Otter as I read that Otter was not a self and I should try to stick with selfs to start out with so as not to mess up colors. I was hoping to buy a couple does and a buck, but want to get the colors right to start with. And I really like the brokens. Ugh!

Don't worry, t's not that big of a deal. You can breed them all. I breed my selfs to otters and agoutis, but if you want to "know" what colors you'll get ahead of time, you need to have all of the info from the peds to predict hidden recessives, which still may not be possible until you run test breedings. I know someone that got torts in her Silver Fox, now that should not happen, but recessives that are not on the pedigree do pop up. The only way to definitively know what you will get each time, is to breed white to white, or Cal to Cal. Even black to black can give you whites, chocolates and blues.

And Dood is trying to tell you just don't get two brokens and you'll be ok.

There are some good sites that have genetic information.

If you want self. Chocolate and lilac are both brown based, chocolate is the Dense color and lilac is the dilute version of chocolate.
aa bb C_D_ for chocolate and
aa bb C_ dd for lilac
If the chocolate carries the"d" dilute gene, then half the kits will be lilac, otherwise they will all be chocolate.

aa B_ C_ D_ is black and if the black carries "b" brown and "d"dilute, you could breed to the lilac and get all 3 self colors, black, blue, chocolate and lilac.
That would make your litters "exciting" in my opinion :)

I love the brown gene colors. Of course my FAVORITE is AMBER, but that's an agouti color and not recognized in the mini rex.But it is in the standard & I love those litters. Here's one with a black, a chocolate, 2 broken ambers and a broken chocolate.

Like Shy says, the selfs to the otters are OK. I loved some of my broken otters Rex.They are gorgeous.

If you like broken, chocolate and blue then get a broken buck who carries theses to genes, ask for one who had a chocolate mom and a blue dad. Or vice versa

When a broken black buck who carries chocolate and blue is bred to a chocolate you'll get black, chocolate, broken black and broken chocolate.

When bred to a blue you will get black, blue, broken black and broken blue.

And depending on their hidden recessives you may get some surprises

Thanks for all the replies. It's a lot to think about or maybe I'm over thinking it. I just didn't want to come back later and have someone say "why on earth would you breed those two colors, people like you are ruining the breed!" This whole being a responsible adult thing is hard and I'm 52!!

One of my favorite teachers has a GREAT phrase that helps with this concern,
"What other people think of me is none of my business!"
Once I realized that,I saved myself a lot of worry.

And you can always use one of the STOP phrases to reply to anyone who is berating you:
Sorry you feel that way.
That’s one way to look at it.
Oh!
Perhaps you are right.

LOL

I never say people are ruining the breed, I do wish that people would take the time to learn about colors before they breed. Or else they wind up with strange combos that we are all scratching our heads over. Which is not really a big deal.

Sky, that wasn't directed at you or anyone else for that matter, but it is you who got me thinking about what colors would work together. And for that I am grateful, because I never gave it any thought before. So now I'm starting down the color road just a tad smarter than I was before.

LOL, but I do understand, and I know myself I am a bit like the color police. But that's only because I like my nest boxes neat and tidy and full of predictable colors. I get the feeling you might be a bit like me:) I have a hard time with surprises (in every aspect of my life) and I find genetics makes things orderly.

LOL, I love the idea of you being the "color police" it really tickles me and I am at the point in my Life where I realize I DON'T really have control of a lot of things and I'm getting to be more and more OK with it... I was SO excited this morning when I was checking a litter box if 10 day old kits & I realized I had all 8 Full-color colors in it. Castor, opal, black, blue, Amber, Lynx, Chocolate & Lilac. Can't wait to get a picture and show it off to you :)

I love all the different colors, I would choose the color you like the most. We started with black and now have black, broken, chocolate, black otter, tort and white. My daughter can pretty much breed anything she has to each other except otter and tort. Her white is genetically black so it's all good!

Pretty much everything gets bred together here, except the chins always bred to chins, and the Seal and Cal to each other. Tried to integrate the Cal into something else, that did not work so well, so unless I can find a black that does not carry dilute, my Sables will just be very inbred.
