Hi everyone! I am new to rabbit breeding, and we're having some issues. Our silver fox female is on day 34, and only birthed one kit. I believe she's still got other kits in her, but I am not any good at palpating yet since I am honestly inexperienced. I tried to feel her belly, but she growled and went to bite me, which is very unlike her. I did not see or feel a baby trapped in the birth canal, but again, I am not 100% what to look for. She did eat a small sliver of apple that I gave her to calm her down while I was feeling her. She's laying on the side of the cage and moves very little. The one baby seems okay. It's alive in her nest. Here is the background information I can offer:

I bought a 2 year old breeding pair last month. They just turned 2.
The female has been very successful in kindling and caring for her kits in the past.
Her average litter size is 8 kits. The owner only sold her because she's developing a show line and this particular rabbit is not registered.
The previous owner bred them while I was there to buy them last month.
I did not palpate at 12-14 days because I am inexperienced and was afraid I would hurt the babies.

She has had 7 litters, one of which was lost (3/15). Her last litter was in October.
She is 11 lbs 13 ounces.

I called the breeder I bought her from, and she said to leave her alone, and maybe she'll birth more. If she hasn't birthed any more by morning I am going to take the single kit to her house so that she can be fostered by one of her does. She said that if there is a stuck kit, the doe might die, and if she does survive, she may be infertile. Is there any other help that anyone can offer?

Don't worry about not palpating. I've been breeding for years now, and still don't bother.

I would second the breeder's opinions on most things, except that it may take longer than overnight to produce more kits. Disturbing the doe can delay labor.

I had a doe go 24 hours between kits - I think the first one caught her off guard, the second came shortly after as she was building the nest, then the rest the next day. There might be a stuck kit in there. I would keep a (distant) eye on her, see what happens.

I had one doe have one kit one evening, outside of the nest, so I had popped it in the nest when I found it. She waited over 36 hours to kindle the other 4, the morning of the second day after the first kit was born. I expected at least one to be dead with that long of a wait, but it wasn't the rest were stuck, she was just so freaked out she held them in, so all were healthy.

The only thing I would try would be to put her with the buck and see what happens. If mine are still pregnant they will almost always growl at him and hunker down, as if to say "not now buster". If shes not pregnant then she may lift and get bred again. Of course you need to be willing to have another litter, but in my heard whatever she does would shed some light on whats going on with her. I hope that shes ok, and isnt having trouble. For what its worth, any stuck kits we have had usually all come within 24-28 hours. I have never had one mummify or stay stuck longer than that.
