My friend got a rabbit from the fair at the beginning of the month. I have noticed it has loose poo. It isn't runny but its very soft and he mushes it. His butt and tail get very gross. We bathed him last week and it was all nasy again. What could it be from. His eyes and nose seem clear. He did have ear mites. But we got rid of them. Thanks for any help. He's in the same area as my other rabbits also.

It could be he is not eating the cecotropes. These "night droppings" are soft, mushy and smelly... quite different from the usual pellets we see. This link explains:

If that is not the case, try giving the rabbit some of the following plants to see if they will help:
- leaves of blackberries, raspberries or strawberries
- The lawn weeds plantain (Plantago major or Plantago lanceolata) and shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)

All these are very safe greens for rabbits, good as feed and as a remedy for loose stools.

Cecotropes that's the smelly ones?
Good god I was wondering what
That was when I would go and
Clean the cage out. Haven't see
This before or smelled this. I was wondering
As well.

If he's not eating his cecotropes then cutting back on his feed might help. He could be too fat to reach down to get them, or his diet may be so rich that he doesn't need to process the nutrients a second time. When I've had buns do this I've cut their pellets down and given them more hay.

I have just noticed this white
My buck. My doe I have t noticed
The smelly poop. I clean the cage a lot
(Few times daily) as my doe was trained
Some to use the littler box but when
I put the buck on the other side she
Won't use the box, however I have noticed
Her using it to pee so that's good.
Should I not clean the cage as much?
Just think its nasty to have all that
Poo laying there.

:yeahthat:

Exactly what I was going to add if countrymomma decided the poops were cecotropes. :goodjob:

Ok. I don't think my Thumps
Is too fat. He is a Dutch and
Is about 4-5 pounds. I just
Have noticed the smelly poop
Recently, more when I'm
In the cage and he just drops
Them so be doesn't have a
Chance to eat them. I will cut
Back on his pellets. I'm giving
Him a 1/4 cup pellets and a little
Less of a table spoon (per request of
The vet) rice a day. I will cut out the tablespoon
Of pellets and see if that helps.

__________ Thu Aug 15, 2013 6:19 pm __________

Sorry I just realized a budged into
