Litterbox Material

I used pine shavings with the other houserabbits simply because it was easy to get ahold of, cheap, and we always had some for the outdoor rabbits anyways. The houserabbits didn't mind it but they got it ALL over the house.

So, any suggestions on what to use in New Rabbit's litterbox? I tried to find corn cob bedding, we sold it at the pet store I used to work for, but that store has since gone out of business and I can't find the stuff.

I'm thinking maybe ferret litter? There's also this weird litter at Wally World for small animals, maybe that's what I need.

wood stove pellets were waaaay cheaper and what we used for the ferrets when we had them. they worked very well, and they composted fast.

I use to use pine shavings for my rabbit, i recently switched to using a bedding thats made of a paper type material. Its a lot softer and its odour controlled and it had made a difference. Ill post a link showing you what i got

Its not the exact one i got, its pretty close though mine is brown/white colour and its smaller chunks.

Reviving/Recycling an old thread...

I am planning on trying to litter train one of my rabbits, and I was wondering what kind wood shavings would be acceptable to use as the litter?
The litters that I have on hand are wood stove pellets and wood shavings, and I would like to be able use one of these so that I don't have start buying a whole new type of bedding. Which would be better, and does it matter what type of wood the shavings/pellets are made from? I don't know what kind of wood either of my bedding litters are made from... I just use them for the trays in my stacking cages, and the outside of the shavings bag doesn't say anything other than the name of a logging company. (And the wood stove pellets are just that. :? )

Pine shaving that you buy for horses in the great big bags is what I use. I prefer the smaller flakes. A lot of times they are like blend so they say.

My quarantine area for new rabbits is a 100 gallon aquarium in my living room. I use the pelleted pine bedding- either for horses or wood stoves, whichever is cheaper at the time.

If you have had no problems with the pellets in your trays, I think they would be just fine in a litter box.

I have no idea if my available litter/bedding is pine or not... The pellet bag says that it is meant for wood stoves, and the shavings bag says for livestock & poultry (I got the bags unopened, but used). Does it matter what kind of wood?

You want to avoid cedar. Most lumber that is milled is pine or fir, so I wouldn't worry too much. Cedar has a distinctive smell, so I think you would recognize it if there is a lot in there.

If you are very concerned, contact the manufacturer. I am sure they would be able to tell you what type of wood it is.

Their cage bottoms are bare plastic and melamine. In the litter boxes, I use Yesterday's News cat litter.

Not sure if you have a Pet Supplies Plus in your area or at worst how far you are from Toledo Ohio since I know for sure they have a couple of the store in that town. Last time I went in they had the corn cob bedding in my store.

It's best to avoid both Pine and Cedar wood shavings. The aromatic smell can cause respiratory problems for rabbits. I currently have found great success with wood stove pellets. If you have long-haired rabbits (like me) the shavings don't stick to their fur. Also, the wood stove pellets tend to stay in their box neatly. They're super absorbent and are really really cheap!

I did some research and the stove pellets are amazing- they absorb more than anything else and are made to be completely pure of toxins so people don't get fumes when they burn so very safe. Way better than any kind of cat litter.
