If it is a standard nestbox with a top, just leave it upright. 
Most of my nests are BASS Sani-nests, which are 8" high all around, and I have seen kits vault over the sides to get back in. Of course, once they start coming out I open the front flap for ease of access... but your little guys should soon be able to hop back in (if they can't already) even without the help of the step.
