I noticed today when I took the runt out to check on it that it's tummy is still big, but kinda firm now on the kit's left side. Can milk harden in a baby's stomach? :? I've been pottying the kit one or two times a day, because I felt Mama probably wasn't doing it, with him staying so fat... What could be wrong with him? Is there a way to maybe to fix it? The kit's about a week old.

I'll be interested in what others know about this. The only kit that ever had that was that way, I found dead the next time I checked. I just thought it meant that it REALLY got fed but then later I realized that it really wasn't normal and all the other VERY FAT kits still had a "soft" feeling to the round belly. I meant to post and ask about it and then got on to other things but I'd like to know what it is.

I rubbed at the kit's tummy for at least 30 minutes this morning and a few minutes off and on throughout the day, and it's a bit less noticeable now, have to actually feel for it.. Its belly is a little smaller now, too.

I think I read here somewhere that in hot weather the milk can curdle in the kits stomach if it is overfed.

The massage was a good idea- the only other things I can think of to do would be to give some probiotics, and perhaps feed it a little olive oil or mineral oil to "grease the pipes". Personally, I'd go with olive oil, but I know vets treat colic in horses with mineral oil so it isn't toxic.

Good luck with the little one. Keep us posted with its progress.

__________ Sat Aug 25, 2012 7:03 pm __________

Then again, olive oil is digestible and mineral oil probably isn't, so maybe it is the better choice after all. Much as I hate the idea of feeding anything a petroleum product, it might be the best option in this case.
