Is silver fox a "breed type" or just a color?

I constantly have to explain that the Cal Rex are not Cal/Rex crosses, but Rex actually come in the color Californian, what other breeds call Pointed white, because Cal__ anything does get confusing. I think colors that denote a specific breed should not be used as color only identifiers in other breeds, but of course that's not up to me...
 
Try explaining that you raise Silvers. No ma'am, I don't mean Silver Fox. Nope, not a Silver Marten. Just a Silver. It's not a silver anything, he's a Silver! What color? Oh, a black Silver. No, he's still silver. He's a silvered black Silver. NO HE'S NOT A SILVER FOX.
