Usually I just feed hay only for two weeks and they seem good to go.
The best thing to do is to regulate how they are fed to avoid getting fat. One of the reasons I started weaning early is the kits are free fed,and I didn't want the doe to get fat.

I know you're right - the best thing for ANY animal we care for is to try to watch carefully and avoid the weight issue to begin with. The current hope is that we'll be leaving the litter in with the doe until processing time and I'm sure it will take some careful planning to put the right amount of food in the bin each day.

I really wish I had done this prior to starting out .... I did a lot of research on rabbit breeds , health , feed and housing needs then went and built an 8x4 two hole hutch .... and had a 3rd smaller hole for my buck. I really didn't plan it out all that well and as a result struggled with simple things. I had direct sun both morning & evening. Nest boxes too large which resulted in suffocated kits cause momma treated it like a sofa ....

It all looked good in my mind .... but wasn't very practical or efficient. After seeing how others did things and knowing exactly what I needed to avoid and how to avoid it .... I've turned things around and had good success.

A thread like this would have saved me a lot of time , effort & money.

That Chihuahua is twice the weight of my dog ....

Half the size as in 3 1/2 pounds? That's one small pup!

Glad to hear that you've been able to turn things around - and good for you for sticking with it! I know that my husband got a little frustrated with me Monday night - when he went to bed Sunday night we had one plan in place, but then I started this thread and did about 12 more hours of reading. So Monday night when he got home from work, not only had I NOT ordered the 4 cages as planned, I had completely revamped our entire Rabbitry plan! He really doesn't care for change very much lol, but once I explained everything he realized that I probably saved us a lot of trouble and money. Hopefully our plan will be sufficient for our needs.

Now if I can just find some rabbits! I have a couple calls out, but really we won't be set up and ready for until the first week of March.

~4.5lbs Maltese. She's ~4 years old and had 3 litters of pups and is the most protective momma I've ever seen , she attacks my son's 25lb cocker if she even thinks about getting near her pups.

I recently got her spayed as I don't want anymore pups .... Its pretty hard on her since she's so tiny.

He'll thank you for it later .... when he doesn't have to redo everything from the ground up.

I wish! The reality is that he is already acting like it was his idea to begin with!
