I weaned a little ND doe at 4 weeks because she was getting beaten up by her brothers. They were all culled in the end but I'm not sure the doe would take her back. I put her in the doe growout pen and I removed the oldest doe to her own cage. It's been a few days and my husband felt a bump on her. On further examination she has a bunch of scabs. I don't know if the older does went after her or the wounds weren't noticeable because they weren't scabbed over when I removed her from the bucks.

I put her in the 1x2' cage I use for netherland quarantine with oatmeal and pellets. I have to go get more hay from the garage. I am debating if I should treat her with antibiotics. Right now nothing feels infected but I'd like to keep her. She has the sweet personality of her mom and finding ND with good personalities is proving difficult around here. The kit was lethargic when out and just wanted to hide under our hands but when put in her new cage she checked everything out and was curious. I always keep ornacycline on hand. It's soluble tetracycline tablets for birds. Mine seems to be a year expired though. Dunno what happens to tetracycline after expiration. I can grab a new pack for a few bucks from the feedstore or a small bag of tetracycline granules for goats but it could be a few days. She's rather small to do penicillin injections.

I have some does that will take in 4 week old kits, but it's not something I expect to see.

Can't help you with antibiotics since I don't use them, but if she's going to be by herself until she's bigger, perhaps she would like a small stuffed animal to keep her company?

When I had that tiny NZ Littlebit (whom I suspected 4 weeks old) in quarantine, He really liked the webkinz rabbit the kids gave him to cuddle with.

I debated putting her with my well mannered but rather large buck. He's a little over 3 lbs which is interesting because his sire that is also his grandsire was about a pound. She's so stressed that I'm not sure I want to try it.

-- Wed Jul 16, 2014 11:24 pm --

She ate a surprising amount of oatmeal which is good since she felt rather bony. Hopefully the lack of fiber isn't a problem. I gave her some of the chinchillas' meadowgrass hay but I'm not sure she's eaten any. Don't ask me what it actually is. It's green, no dust, weed free, and sweet smelling so I don't care too much what grass species went in to it.

You could probably give her a tiny bit of green stuff, like strawberry leaves, bramble leaves, or plantains.

I've had no troubles with giving kits oats, and I really believe that it's lowered my infant mortality rates a since I've been feeding them.

Living in the condo with lots of dogs pooping everywhere there is very limited forage. I only have the occasional vegetable, like last nights carrot peelings, and what I steal off the crab apple tree. The tree is running out of lower branches. Hopefully no one is noticing.
