Ack! I've been betrayed! I thought men were supposed to have each others back :(
lol,but if there is one or two good things that come out of this I've at least given you family something to talk about and laugh over. :D

__________ Tue Jan 21, 2014 10:48 am __________

Just thought I'd update my "mad-hatter" project. All 4 does have kindled. The first kindled on 1/20/14 in the dark of the morning. I wasn't expecting her to so I didn't have any nesting box in there with her like I did one of the others. She did a great job pulling fir and trying to make a nest. They probably would have made it if I had the bottom of the cage made out of hardware cloth but I don't so all 8 fell through. Came out and they were dead. My fault, feel bad, learned and moved on. I rebred her that day and she lifted nicely, which is a huge plus as concerns her future life.

After that loss I palpated the others to get a feel (no pun intended) for how far along they were. They all felt ready to pop so I put the two nesting boxes that I had already built in for 2 of them and then thought about using a 5 gal bucket for the other. I scraped that idea as the bucket is round and it just didn't seem like they would be well in there so I went ahead and found some left over pieces of wood and made a 3rd box for her.

It wasn't any time at all after I had put the boxes and straw in with them that they started working on their nest. It was almost as if they were simply waiting for it. Two of them kindled within hours of the box being put in on 1/20/14. One of them actually kindled while I was still making the third box. The two that kindled both did well with feeding and having the babies. I was impressed. One had 6 with 1 death. Not sure how it died. Wasn't elongated or out of the fir, just dead. The other had 8, all healthy as of this typing.

The last doe kindled last night, 1/21/14 with a healthy 8 kits. I was worried because yesterday it was a very comfortable 45F and that was supposed to drop to 20's for the high with snow storms today. She did great though. All the nests, except 1 were well made. The one that wasn't well made was....meh, ok. I'd have done better. :)

All in all I'm very satisfied with how everything turned out. After over 24 weeks of not even being able to get my does pregnant I finally have foo...I mean cute little bunnies. I would post pictures but they are just pink balls of flesh. When they get fir I might post since MC made posting pics soooo much easier now :)

Whoo-hoo! SUCCESS!!! :bouncy:

I'm so happy for you Mystang! :clap2: Finally you have a passel of cute little bunny food- er! bunny foo-foos!

But this bears the question... are you one of those controlling types? :hmm: Could this be the universe's way of telling you to chill out? :pokeeye:

Thanks MSD! The answer to your questions would be yes and yes. The latter is probably the universe screaming it at me haha. Now then Pinky.....how do I control the universe? :reading1:

How did I ever guess? Give your wife a consoling pat on the shoulder from me, will ya? And thank her for her selfless service in taking you on, thereby saving other unsuspecting ladies from her plight!

lol, she is my angel in disguise. I couldn't imagine any other woman being able to handle me for what I am. She's great. I'll even give her a kiss for ya =P

I'm sure she is very happy having you for a Hubs, too, Mystang. I don't doubt for a second that there is much love and laughter in your home. :D

Remember this?

For one thing, you have obviously forgotten the Second Law of Rabbit Breeding:

"Success in breeding is inversely proportional to the amount of available cage space."

:rotfl:

Depending on how things turn out, Mystang might just need to put that quote as his signature.

With proper credit going to the wise sage Miss M, of course.

I do believe it is time to give yourself a signature, Mystang. While you are there editing your profile, make sure to add Old Glory too. :gettowork:

There is much laughter in this house...just most of the time its coming from me while my wife and kids stand there shaking their heads at me lol

It's on my to-do list :p

__________ Tue Jan 21, 2014 2:33 pm __________

I actually tried to put a pic up but it was over 250kb so I get to stick with the mysterious ? lol Makes me feel like the Riddler from one of the old Batman Movies. You know, the ones no one ever watched because they were so terrible. :D

I'm new to raising rabbits for meat and tried a colony this year. Best idea ever. It is so much easier to have one large cage and the rabbits have done really well together. My two does had litters one day apart and shared a nest. I was worried about this at first and admittedly had some smaller babies and some bigger babies; in the end, all of the kits survived and are healthy. Leaving them all together may be much easier...

By the way, my colony is a 4' x 8' dog kennel that I converted.

Very nice ekae! I've been tossing around the idea of making a colony area but with the cold weather I haven't made it past the idea phase.

The 7 kits from doe #2 all died today from the cold, no chance at reviving them. Will rebreed mom tomorrow. If she is receptive she has another shot at staying alive. If not she'll be culled on the next available nice day.....sometime after hell has stopped freezing.

Yeah. It was nice knowing I was going to have over 20 kits ready for the spring but I guess if the rest live 13 is still better than the huge 0 I had

__________ Wed Jan 22, 2014 8:30 pm __________

All 9 kits in cage 1 died tonight. Thought the mom might be doing well since she was constantly in there with them. Will rebreed her tomorrow and see how she does. The cage 2 doe wasn't very receptive. Will try to rebreed tomorrow as well. If neither are receptive both are culled. Hopefully the last rabbit with kits will do well. They are still alive as of this typing. The weather can be a cruel mistress :(

If a doe has built a decent nest, kindled live kits and fed them, I do not count it against her if they die because of extreme weather. Rabbits do not warm their kits the way that a dog or cat might. It's just not in their programming.

Let's hope your girls are receptive to rebreeding and that by the time they kindle again the weather will be somewhat less frigid.

The doe in the first cage didn't build the greatest nest but I thought it was still passable. Doing a closer examination of the kits it looked like some of them were flattened which I can see since she was constantly in there. I'm still going to try to rebreed her but if she isn't receptive then she isn't a doe that I want anyway.

Oh, gosh! I'm sorry you lost them, Mystang. :(

If there is any fur in the nests of the lost kits, I would add it to the survivor's nestboxes to make sure they stay warm.

I hope the does do better next time. :clover:

I'm so sorry you've lost so many kits!

You might want to try the rebreeding several days in a row... she may finally lift for the buck. Especially with temps like yours, the weather may be playing a part in her reluctance, too.

Maybe bring your remaining nest inside for the nights until they fur out? :(

Bah! Didn't even think about doing that before I threw it away. I'll dig through the trash and get some for it later today.

@missM that's probably what I'll do. If I can brave the cold king enough I'll put her in with a buck.

Do your rabbits have resting boards?

If the does are cold they will hide in the nest to try and keep warm and may accidentally trample kits. Perhaps put in a second box that the girls can huddle in without disturbing their young.

Yes, they do have plywood boards I put in there so they wouldn't get sore hocks. I can't try to put in another box but if its they're in an inclosed space to begin with so I would have thought without any wind blowing on them they'd be comfortable with all that fir on them. I know my hand is when I pick them up lol.
