My bun Lily had her second litter on January 15th. Her first litter only one survived. That baby (Powder) grew big and strong. This new litter has 8 kits, all alive and healthy. I suspect that Lily is not producing enough milk for 8 babies. They are growing, they are starting to jump in and out of the nest box and they run around on the floor but they are constantly trying to nurse on our skin and making smaking noises with their mouths. Their bellies aren't big and round but they aren't wrinkled either. Tonight we noticed some seem to be grinding their teeth. It sounds too loud for the purring sounds I've heard. I'm concerned that this is the sound rabbits make with their teeth when they are in pain. Or maybe it is just a part of what they do when trying to nurse. YIKES! They have sharp little teeth! I feel sorry for Lily if they are doing this on her nipples. Does anyone have any idea what this behavior is?
Also, I've read about the herbs that can increase milk production. I'm gonna get Lily some fresh parsley and alfalfa hay cubes tomorrow. I also read that borage and fennel can help. For the life of me I don't know where to get fresh borage and fennel in the middle of winter in Wisconsin, or how much to give her even if I found it.
Please, any advice is welcome and thank you in advance!
