In the 1.5 years I've had rabbits I've made most of my own cages, built my own shelters, butchered the rabbits, cleaned skulls, and tanned hides all by myself besides occasionally asking his advice. I think he finally realized I'm hooked.

He hunts and fishes and is used to butchering and eating game. He's never once offered to help me butcher and I didn't ask...until a couple of days ago. I didn't ask, he just offered. I think he's finally resigned himself to my raising and eating rabbits. :p

He wasn't a big fan of rabbit meat at first but when I started deboning and frying I think that helped win him over (although personally I think him not liking rabbit was mostly mental, he eats almost anything lol). :D We butchered 5 (I really was faster lol) and I fried up a bunch of loins for supper. He even bragged on me at work.

I think my dumping 17 wheel barrel loads of rabbit manure in our garden area right before he disked it may have helped as well.

So anyway this really is a random rabbit rambling but I wanted to share.

In case anyone is wondering my next project is pork/rabbit/venison sausage...

Whoo-hoo!!! Yet another convert to the wonderful world of raising rabbits. Dare we hope that he will soon succumb to his own case of Raging Rabbitosis?

I have always been an avid animal lover, so am rather prone to bringing innumerable critters home. As a result I have had to deal with the resulting flak over the years... "Another one? Ple-e-ase, no!" But when I decided to raise rabbits for meat and the family became enamored of rabbit enchiladas, tacos, wings, and all meals featuring delectable bunnies, that censure finally came to an end- at least with regard to that particular species.

"Another rabbit? More meat for us!" so finally, FINALLY!, I can bring another animal home without fear of sighs and ridicule! :p Yay ME!!!

Ah, yes, the wonders of bunny berries! When I first started bagging mine up and selling it, Hubs had a conniption fit! "But, but! WE need that for our garden!" he wailed pitifully. Thankfully, I have so many bunnies that we can sell it and still have plenty for our own use.

So... it's not just us?

DH wasn't too sure about this whole rabbit thing, but he went along with it as I got started. Now? He's starting to brag on me at work as well ;) He was iffy with the meat until one night he made "chicken nachos" when I wasn't home, only to later find out it was rabbit. That got him over his mental hurdle. I made some bean soup tonight using rabbit instead of chicken - DH was working late and I was fully prepared for the kids to make a fuss (I don't like beans! Soup? Ew!) but they have learned that supper is supper, I'm not a short order cook. Anyway, DH didn't even get a full bowl, and I was anticipating leftovers! The kids have gotten over the whole meat thing as well... and I even got our neighbor to try it. She will eat wild no problem, but had an issue with "tame rabbit"... not anymore!

He didn't even bat an eye when I mentioned picking up another one out of the blue on Sunday... not totally "on a whim" but not at all expected.

Lol I don't have a DH but my neighbor was terribly envious of the berry fed garden last year and is offering labor for berries now :D and, about to be struck with rabbitosis himself.

Hubby and I are both wanting to become more self sufficient. I never did really understand his problem with the rabbits. He's been all for having a large garden this year and we are a good ways along to having a nice orchard in a few years. He's told me we can get chickens this spring and he will build me a chicken hutch and we are also getting a feeder pig around the first of May. Pretty excited about everything.

I bought a gallon of goats milk at the store yesterday. I'm going to see if that will help with some of our allergies. It was $10.99 a gal :x It's pastured but from a dairy that's only about 2 hrs from us.

My father-in-law just bought my hubby two really nice sized elberta peaches for his birthday.

I'm very thankful I can get fresh goats milk just down the road for $7/gallon - "pet consumption only" but that's OK. Literally, pumped from the goat, chilled in a tank, then directly to my container. I need to get back into the habit of going... I just don't really use it much (any milk, that is) anymore.

Rabbits are perfect "gateway" livestock.

My husband wasn't too sure about them to start with either, but now, he's fully on board, always making plans to expand the rabbitry, helping me break hides, etc..

He is no longer against the idea of buying a few acres, building a barn, and getting started with milk sheep for cheese. :)

Our future will have more chickens too, when we have more room for them.
He's also taken a liking to edible birds in general, and may eventually want fancy pheasants, pigeons, and/or turkey to go with the quail and chickens.

One surprising perk is that his hunting has also improved dramatically in the past few years. I think, once he became accustomed to dispatching rabbits, goats, and birds at home he became more confident towards dispatching animals at range.

The funny thing about hubby is that he grew up with cattle and always had show pigs (which they ate), just not small livestock, no chickens or anything.

Of the 5 grow outs I butchered on Sunday, All I have left is a bag of front legs.... :p These were all pretty good sized grow outs too. All of them were between 4 and 5 lbs. I didn't even get a chance to freeze any of it. There are 6 of us though and my 16 year old son is apparently going through a growth spurt. I'm having a hard time finding things to fill him up.

Thankfully I have a bunch of growouts that will be ready in a couple of weeks.
