My NZR buck, Wheatley, is young. However, I know that fertility depends on the rabbit and not averages, so I've been putting Wheatley with my two does since the beginning of summer. Nothing. Maybe it's too hot? Maybe he's still too young? Nothing. Two false pregnancies. I became so frustrated that I bred our MR and our NZ cross just for some babies, who are now just shy of 8 weeks old. I put Wheatley and Heaven in the backyard and watched bunny antics wondering if this would be the time... and I think it was!! Heaven is definitely rotund in the belly and is very much more amenable to being pet! That means my first Wheatley kits will be born around October 10! Granted, they'll be mixes, but they're my freezer rabbits. 3/4 NZR and 1/4 Mini Rex!! LOL I can't wait to see if Heaven carries the 'ee' and maybe throws some little fawns or reds! If not, they'll all be agoutis, but that'll be okay too. It's hard to get attached to rabbits that you can't tell apart.
October looks like a good month! One more rabbit show, some babies (hopefully), and no more heat sterility! I'll breed Wheatley to Megan after the show and we'll see if their babies rock the conformation block--they should, since their individual faults should be corrected by their partner. Now I'm considering picking up a NZW buck from a local guy whose rabbits have been impressing the local ARBA judges, and when Rainey is ready in December for her first beau, I'll see if I can't put some size back in the Reds locally!!
