My singleton Holland Lop baby will be a week old tomorrow. It doesn't have much fur yet and it's pretty chilly here, so I'm still keeping her inside. Her belly looks more full this morning but not tight and plump like a couple days ago. I sure hope it's not a peanut...it's eyes are bulgey, but it's ears look fine. It's hindquarters look pinched but it has good use of it's back legs. I'm just worried because I swear it's barely grown in a week. Every other peanut I've tried to help nurse can't seem to latch on properly and never, ever gets a full tummy. (I know peanuts won't survive but I hate seeing them starve to death so sometimes I flip the doe  ) This little one seems to be able to nurse well, and eliminates just fine. Also, the doe is a true dwarf, I'm pretty sure, but the sire isn't...he's a bit large for a Holland. So, I don't think it could possibly be a peanut...maybe it's just the runt? It's proved it's a little fighter being the only surviving kit out of 8! I just hope it can live...it's still so tiny. :(

I was hoping you'd see this Sky. Thank you. I won't give up as long as she's living. :) And that's true she has had a rough start. Plus, I'm guessing she probably didn't get as much in utero with 7 other siblings.

I've had the runty ones turn out bigger than the normal ones, so I don't cull small ones anymore. I let nature take its course. If she starts to have problems nursing that would signal a turn for the worse.

Ok, good to know. I brought Victoria in for a mid day feeding just to try to help little Dottie out. I figure it won't hurt. :)

__________ Wed Oct 10, 2012 10:01 pm __________

Well, I'm thinking we may be coming to the end with Dottie...she seems to be having trouble nursing now. I even brought in my other nursing doe (just in case for some reason Victoria didn't have milk) but the little one just seems to be losing strength and her belly is becoming sunken. I know I've done everything I can though...
:(

Aw, poor baby! :( You have really done everything you can, with bringing in the other doe and all. The only other thing available to try would be formula with an eyedropper, but if she's failing after such a good start, I don't know that that would help. That's why I think you've done all you can. :)

We've all been cheering for her.

Thank you both for the encouragement and support. I really appreciate that. She's still alive this morning but looks weak. :(
