So about a month ago my buck started loosing weight rapidly and died... He was old so I though it was old age. Well shortly after my 2 year old buck started loosing weight. I wormed him and fed him as much as he would eat. He seemed to be gaining weight and doing a lil better then today I went in and he was dead... Now my prize doe is loosing weight rappidly. Idk what to do I can't afford a vet I barely have the money to feed my self. I can't have my last 3 die!

Get something like gatorade into them-- ensure good hydration, massage the gut, AND MAKE LOTS of notes-- you may be missing something that one of us may recognize...
S eparate them from each other,a s well, sanitize everthing, etc..

I wish I had some answers for you. What are you feeding them? All that comes to mind at the moment is something toxic in their feed. Did you do a necropsy to see if you could spot any abnormalities in the organs?

The second buck had a scabby nose and lost the fur on his feet.

__________ Fri Apr 19, 2013 2:49 pm __________

PurIna show chow and Timothy hay. I wouldn't know what to look for and can't ford someone else to do it.

Hi Cowgirl, so sorry for your losses. :(
What did you use as a wormer?
ivermectin...it seemed to help like he was gaining weight again then died.. Could it be worms and he was just to weak to come back around?

You need to open them up and check internal organs, it's a lot more helpful than guessing and trying random drugs.

scabby nose, weight loss...I'd be checking them for

1. fungal infection
2. vent disease
3. other disease

then ask yourself...
1. could it be feed related?
2. could there be a toxin in the environment
3. housing? predators around?

He is already gone in the trash truck :-/ my doe has now stopped eating.... What should I look for? I checked her vent and it was fine....

does she have a scabby nose as well?
any Snot/wet front legs?
head held up or back?
Strength and "mass" when held?

Do you see anything physically amiss?
Do you see any bugs, mites, white things in poop?
Pooping, peeing okay?
What does the feed look/smell like?
Any mould/mildew in the surrounding area?
Any mouse poop?

What else folks could she look for that I haven't mentioned?

No scabby nose, no snot, no wet front legs, she is actually holding head low, no mass, loss ing a lot of weight, maybe white things in poop... My jus be dust, it is very very tiny. Feed is brand new looks and smells fine. I hope there is no mold or mildew she is in our house. She is pooping but they are small poops. I don't think there is mouse poop. I'm going to the vet Monday.... Good bye lunch for the next half a year.... I don't ushualy take my buns to the vet but I've lost two already and now her and they were all 75 to 150 dollars to buy. A pricey trip to the trash can if I can't figure out what is roung. I have 3 left here is to hoping they won't catch it.

Fluid consumption is the key to a rabbit's appetite. Have you changed watering systems lately?

Maybe offer her some Gatorade or make your own electrolytic solution.

Also, have you considered wool block as a cause? Palpate her abdomen and see if you feel a hard mass in there.

A couple of helpful threads for dealing with and preventing wool block:

I hope you can find out what is causing this. Good luck at the vet. :clover:

I'm thinking she's has wool block or something entropathic going on.

you need to push fluids fairly hard. Fresh pineapple juice, snapple ice tea (mix 1/3 ice tea to 2/3 water), papaya, if you have it available...prickly lettuce. Just get her eating anything wet/moist you need the fluids.

Have you check their teeth? I've had rabbits die because they couldn't eat. Now I check teeth if they lose weight and also feel them every now and then to make sure it's not just bones under the fur.

I mixed some raspberry tea with her water and she drank an entire bottle. I'm giving her carrots and bok chow too. She is eating her pellets a little.... She just has gotten skinny in the last week and a half and she is ushualy over weight if anything.

I would remove pellets and just feed hay.
Yes, probably this for a couple of days, then hay and oats for a couple of days... then start adding in pellets a bit at a time.

So glad you got her drinking! Careful with the carrots... while they have a lot of moisture, they also have a lot of sugar.
