Going to look at a litter tomorrow. Don't know that I've ever seen the breed in person. Looking forward to it.
Anyone have giant chins?

I have American Chinchillas rather than giants but I've had great luck with my first trio and I am very pleased with their temperament and production qualities.

Unfortunately, I believe I may have walking pneumonia, and didn't make it out to see the bunnies today. So much congestion my head was just dizzy and I didn't feel safe to drive. Thankfully, much better this evening. I hope to see a rapid improvement!

I used to have a Flemish doe that ran about in the barn. She was such a sweetheart. I lost her to fly strike - didn't even know what that was at the time.
I've yet to find another to replace her, so when I found the Giant Chinchilla ad on craigslist, I've wanted to go see them, but weather and sickness has kept me away.
If I am able to get one, I will certainly post pics!

Sorry about your Flemish. Poor thing.

I don't think I've ever seen a Giant Chin in person. :? I'll have to keep an eye out at shows.

So if you do get one it will it be another barn mascot? That sounds fun. :)

I hope you feel better soon, Luvabunny!

Feel better this morning finally. It's been several hours since my last hard cough and I made it thru the night without having to get up and blow my nose. This has been going on for over a week. I'm so sick of it. Trying to work something out with the breeder as we speak. She works today.

I'm not sure about barn mascot, but possibly. Depends on if I get a buck or doe. The old girl I had was 7 or 8 years old and didn't have much "fight" in her, so any rabbits in bottom cages were safe. I have stacking cages 3 tall.

"Granny" had severe caking on the bottom of her hocks from living in deplorable conditions for so long. She was also severely overweight. When her hocks began getting better, she lost huge chunks of fur, all the way down to skin, and she acted like she was sore hocked, even tho she lived on the ground and was never on wire after I got her. I believe it was this that caused the fly strike to begin, but I'm not really sure. I checked her hocks regularly. I was amazed when I walked out one evening to find her dead, after having an apparently healthy and happy rabbit that morning. I felt terrible.

Just made an appt with owner. I'm to meet with her at 7:30 tonight. Yippee!

I still have some GCs. They are totally different from the elops. Even when I bring them in the house, they will stay in a two foot square, but the elops will have the whole house explored in a matter of minutes. They are still and quiet most of the time, but i have seen a momma or two who can be toots with babies, but the are really gentle giants.

I'm still not sure whether I want to get a buck or doe. I want the size of the doe, and she actually has a young bred doe for sale, but I have found the personalities of bucks usually make for better pets.
Maybe I'll get both!

I thought GC only came in the silver chinchilla color, but I have seen an ad from someone who is advertising your name ilovehome and her bunnies are definitely the chestnut agouti. Are they supposed to be that color, or can I assume those are crossbred with Flemish or something?

The babies often have brown looking fur on the tips, but will silver up at their first molt. They should not be chestnut...they are mixed if they are.

That's what I thought.
You may want to do a craigslist search of the Tulsa area.
I'm sure you know who this is.

I'm not sure I'd want my name associated with the pictures she is showing of purebred Giant Chins.

They definitely do not just have tips. These are full color chestnut agouti.

__________ Sun Jan 12, 2014 11:20 pm __________

So, I took a look at the babies and brought 2 home - a boy and a girl!
They are littermates, born 11/29 so right around 6 weeks old.

The boy has a light brown cast to him, as you said he might, but the girl is full chin already.

I saw both the parents - not really as big as I expected, but heavy, and built like bricks. Both are the most beautiful chin color.

The babies are just the sweetest things. They obviously hadn't been handled much, but settled right down. I got both the parents pedigrees, will have to make up the babies pedigrees myself.

Here is the girl. She was the largest of the litter.

The boy. You can see the chestnut cast to him. The owner said his Papa was the same way, but a gorgeous chin now.

And for a size comparison to my now 4 week old Elop babies. I have no expectations that my Elops will possibly be that big in another 2 weeks.
It would be nice, but it ain't gonna happen!

I keep telling myself that these are just pets, but I certainly didn't need a pair for just pets, and I certainly don't need any babies for just pets. I'm probably gonna end up showing them too.....

Congrats on your new buns! GCs are lovable. My first one, Rhett, is a forever bunny for me. He is 3 now. I hope you do show them, too.

Congrats. They are adorable.

My Rex chins that have a brownish cast usually come out with a darker surface color than the ones without.
