I got some NZW's today!!! PAID $2.00 a peice for them. I STILL can't believe it! I bought all the man would sell. Which was 10 of them. The other thing good about it is that they are all breeding age! But.... I'm pretty sure they have ear mites. I have them away from all my other rabbits and I put mineral oil in their ears. How often should I do this? I have also got to trim their nails. 1 of them has one that is kind of to the side what should I do about this?

very good. how old were they all?

ear mites. When I got rabbits that had them I treated them daily for four days, then every other day for a couple of days, and then every three days for another couple. Seemed to get rid of the problem.

Congrats. Clip those nails as low as you can go the first time, then clip a little more every few days.

With that many, I would likely treat them with Ivermectin to get rid of the mites....

That is cheap! They want $25 and up for New Zealands here, most are more in the $35. range. Congrats on your good deal!

$2 each? I hate to dampen the mood, but are you sure you didn't just buy someone's problem animals? Did you see the conditions they were raised in? I hope they come through quarantine well, and I am just being the pessimist in the room.

The toenail that is off to the side could be due to a broken toe or congenital deformity, or it could simply be a result of being too long. I am not sure how you would be able to differentiate between a break and a deformity, so if there is something obviously wrong with the toe, I would cull that one. If nothing is obviously wrong, I would trim it and see how it regrows and then make my decision.

Good luck with the new buns! If all goes well you are off to a roaring start! :)

Dinners for $2 :
Value menu fast food burger
TV Dinner
Cup Noodles
Grilled NZW :p

(It's easy when it's not my rabbits lol)

Haha! Good point, HR! :dinner:

That's the nice thing about rabbits... we can eat any mistakes! Well, almost any...

They r over a year old. But I do know I can't buy a meat rabbit around here for $2.00. ;) What I don't want will b culled. I did the mineral oil last night. When should I do it again?

__________ Tue Jun 19, 2012 12:44 pm __________

I usually pay $25 for mine that r breeding age and $10 for 6 week olds. So when they said $2 I had to jump on the deal plus he gave me 3 feeders and is going to call me when he gets rid of some of his cages!

Geez... wonder what astronomical fee he'll want for his cages... four or five bucks, maybe?

What an awesome score!!! And, even if it is like MSD says, someone else's problems, for $2 each, I imagine you could deal with any problems long enough to get some litters grown out as replacements :D

I'm thinking that I might keep 4 of the best looking ones and take the other ones to auction when i get them all back in good shape.

If he's selling cages too, maybe he is getting out of rabbits or just cutting down in numbers fast- maybe he grew too fast, was overwhelmed by the ear mites, didn't know what to do.

I am an eternal optimist so I would look at it as very lucky and see how they turn out after some TLC. Worse case, eat them, best case, maybe you have some more breeding stock. Love to see pictures...
