I finally have popples again! I've been trying since the middle of August. I had two does due (litter mates) and both kindled one 8 and one 7. I was pretty pleased with the litter size considering these are both first time does and the first litters after my buck went heat sterile. I was actually expecting 4 or 5.

The bad news is I think I lost one litter. The doe had them in the nestbox but didn't pull much fur. 5 where in the front completely uncovered and 3 were in the back with a light covering of fur. I have them in the dryer (not running) trying to warm them. They are still cool to the touch but starting to warm up a bit. However, I really don't have much hope at this point. She also over cleaned a few one is missing an ear and one is missing a large patch of skin off it's front leg. She did seem concerned when I took out the nestbox, though.

Now here are the questions. Should I rebreed her or give her a few kits from the doe who seems to be doing good? The litter of 7 that is alive look to have been fed already. If I decide to rebreed her do I do it tomorrow or wait a few days?

Now for the litter that warm and kicking. A few of them look like they have a bit of dried poop on their bottoms. If they still have that this afternoon should I take a warm wet cloth and clean them off?

Well, I'm trying to post pictures but my computer is being stupid. I'll post them in a comment.

Had to restart my computer but here they are. One of the whites has dark eyes so we'll see what color that one turns out.

I would split the litter between the two does and re-breed both of them, if they are in good condition - which they should be if they haven't had litters in 4 months

I prefer to wait 48 - 72 to let the reproductive tract heal a bit but if there were no complications you can breed right away

Thank you for that Dood. I was wondering about how many hrs to wait.

If I do decide to split the litter and breed both does back when do I wean the kits? Seems like I would have to wean them at about 3.5 weeks old?

Congrats on the kits, BTW they're beautiful!

Thank you! I'm so happy to finally have babies again!

You can rebreed right away... leaving them until the next day generally proves more successful though. :)

I wouldn't split them up... but if you want a back up in case something untoward happens again, then splitting them up and rebreeding both might be in your own best interest (well.. in the eventual kits best interest). :)

have fun raising babies!

Someone please explain why you Whould split that litter up. If you want to rebreed the doe that is not taking care of her kits go for it but I sure wouldn't give her some that are doing fine where they are. Maybe if the other doe had more than 10 give her a few but 7 or 8 :? Doesn't make any sence to me just my two cents. Good luck

Personally, I would leave the kits with their moms. If the litter of seven is doing fine with the other doe, I would leave them with her and keep an eye on the other and her remaining kits. Why? If for no other reason than not wanting to lose more kits if the troubled doe continues to have troubles with feeding or neglect.

I would re-breed both though, just in case.

Beautiful kits!

I think the does instincts just kicked in a bit late. She has pulled more fur and stashed it in a corner this morning. I think she will do fine with her next litter. I think she would have done fine with this litter if I had caught them in time. First litters after summer sterility and they have to have them on the first below freezing nights we have...

As far as the bit of poop that was stuck to the live kits, it was mostly gone when I checked them yesterday afternoon. Two still had a bit. If they still have it today I'm going to gently wipe it with a warm wet cloth unless someone tells me something different.
