Well said Katie!
However, I must try to make this one additional point. If one believes that people are just another animal in the great cycle of life, then you must apply that philosophy equally among species. In other words, one cannot possibly justify mass killings of cockroaches or mice or fleas with pesticides while holding true to the belief that we are all animals on equal footing and value. If I must have compassion for the hog/cow/rabbit/chicken that I slaughter; if that animal's life is so precious then why is it acceptable to mass destroy those animals upon which society places less value (think ticks, lice, mosquitoes, rats, stink bugs)??? Sorry, but as Dr. Spock would say "Your position is simply not logical".
But thankfully, we don't all have to agree to still remain friendly with one another on this board. I must apologize though, as I actually expected a bit of hostility for my original post. You folks rock!!!

I stand by my comments above and excuuuuuse me for giving "Mr." Spock a superior title. If all animals are the same, who cares about your health concerns. Your health shouldn't trump the life of a cockroach. You're nothing but another animal in the great cycle of life that simply evolved from pond scum by incredible odds. But some animals are valued and some are not. Show compassion to the rabbit but none to roach. Insane reasoning, isn't it!

Yes, yes we are. That is mostly correct, except for the 'incredible odds' part. There is nothing incredible at all about it. We are simply in the position of being, for the most part, at the top of the food chain and have had the extra brain capacity to adapt our surroundings to us more quickly than our competitive species.

Nevertheless, I clearly stated that I believe NO creature should be tortured unnecessarily. If another creature, whether it be human or flea, is chewing on me, I will stop it by whatever means necessary. This isn't because my life is more important in the scheme of the universe, but because my life is more important to ME. That doesn't mean, however, that I would choose an inhumane path if more compassionate ones are available.

The very word 'humane', from 'human' means "having or showing compassion or benevolence"... If only most of us tried to live up to our name, both in our treatment of other species and each other, the world would be a better place.

What bothers me the most is having them afraid. So after some horrible experiences I ended up using a bunny playpen. They get to play and eat grass and I dispatch them with an air pistol as soon as they relax. It seems easier that way for everyone involved.

Rabbitdog is right- you all are awesome!

So awesome that us Mods may find ourselves out of a job... *sniff!*
I don't think there's any danger of that... why, if it weren't for us, half the forum would probably have bought kitchens from those UK spammers!
