I have a 16 by 20 pen in my barn that I would like to use. Now can I put all 6 does and both bucks in this one colony or would it be better to divide the pen in half and give each buck his own side with 3 does each? :?

Honestly either way is fine with me. Though, I do like the space they would have if I keep it one pen. I plan to put a lot of things to climb on and hide under in there, And build some second level areas as well.

two bucks with does = fighting bucks.

if your does haven't been raised together since younglings = fighting does.

so plan things well .

Thank you. The does were raised together and are still together now. Thanks for the info on the bucks. I will be making two colonies. :)

I've put 2 adult bucks in a space slightly smaller several times. It just depends on the bucks. Knowing which buck produced what and being able to move them around is useful though. In a space that size I see no problems introducing adult does. They'll chase and throw each other around a little but any who don't stop there would have grown up to become aggressive when bred anyway in my experience. If a doe doesn't work out in colony she doesn't work out whether you raise her with siblings or introduce as adults provided we are talking about a large area and not a couple does in a hutch or small pen.

It is two large pens inside my barn with wire up the walls. I think I will stick with one buck per pen. If I decide on having another buck I can always divide the 16 by 20 in half. :) I will definitely keep that in mind about the temperament of does. Thank you.
I picked up my bunnies for the colonies today. I put 6 NZ/Harlequin does and one NZ/Harlequin buck in the big pen. Then I put the castor rex buck and the Lilac Otter rex doe in the other pen. I am going to be getting the momma of the lilac doe and her litter mate, as well as the daddy to her. The guy is going to bring them to me in a few weeks since he lives almost 200 miles away.

__________ Sat Jul 28, 2012 4:23 pm __________

Now to set up some fun stuff in the colonies to keep the Bunz all happy.
