OK, I've noticed for some time that my SF doe is slightly red. I always thought, well it must be the lighting, or that maybe it was a SF trait. But now that my SF buck is grown out a bit, I can clearly see a difference in fur color... although my buck has some oddities too (see it in a different post- I thought that both color questions in one post might get confusing since there will be lots of pictures.) And then it got me thinking- SF's must be agouti, since I can clearly see a ring when I pull back her fur. But how can my black SF fox, with only blue and black in her pedigree, have red in her??
She has blue and black SF rabbits on her pedigree. Her parents were both black, but some of her brothers were blue. So, she could be "Dd" or "DD" (I will breed her to a blue carrier buck this September and figure out that). The breeder only had black SF's for breeding. There weren't any chocolates or lilacs in the litter or in the rabbitry. Also, there are none of the harlequin/wool carriers on her pedigree.
So, here are some pictures:

This is her eye- does it look a little ruby colored?

This is the picture that shows the reddish color most clearly:

She has a little patch on her shoulder that is extremely red:

Is she molting?? There were occasionally black spots in the middle of the ring-

sorry for so many pictures, but I don't know how else to describe it...
thoughts on how in the world this can happen?

"Sunbleached" I think people call it. I live in a forest and keep my rabbits under a roof, but even my dark rabbits turn red. lol
As for the undercolor, she could be steel, but lacks the steel ticking? I have a few steel babies just like that.

My other SF has a white under color too (although he's weird as well)...
She's under the tress and in the shade all but a few hours of the day when half of her run is in the sun. But I guess she could've sunbleached if she lays in the sun whenever possible.

Mine rarely see sun. I don't think it takes much to turn them red. XD

Is there any way to prevent the sunbleaching? Besides keeping them locked up indoors all day...

__________ Wed Jul 31, 2013 2:45 pm __________

Also- it won't get passed down to her kits, will it?

Its just sun bleaching. Keep her away from the light, don't let other rabbits pee on her, brush her out often. Pee and old fur can sometimes turn brown. It's all very normal.
