Hoping for some babies soon or I'm chucking them all.

Can't seem to get my girls pregnant. How can I go from being overrun by babies so easily to it being like pulling teeth just to get a couple of litters only to have half of them die mysteriously. I have one group almost to butchering age and a small younger litter...that's it. I should have babies everywhere. I don't :( I finally just bred almost all of them at once hoping something would take. I even decided to go ahead and try breeding one of my crosses I let get to adulthood because I didn't want to process just one. Figured if my breeders aren't doing their job, I might as well take my chances with her. I am about out of rabbit in the freezer, I think I have a package of tenders left. My fryers will be ready soon, but there aren't many of them. My goal is to have enough to eat rabbit twice a week and stock up for summertime, but at this rate, I'll be lucky to have once a week rabbit meals and be SOL during the hot months. Grrrr. Please cross some fingers and toes and whatever send whatever fertility blessings you know to my does. I have 4 possibly bred due soon and put 3 in with bucks yesterday. One doe is a little underweight after weaning, so I'm letting her sit this one out. One other doe is on her third strike after missed attempts with both my main bucks. Come spring, I might be looking for some replacements. I can't fathom going back to buying chicken from the store. I really need them to start pulling their weight.

:sorry: Fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for you. I just bred two of my does last night. So if it all works out and I get a ton of Lilacs I could send some your way. Living to show/breed or less living to munch.:fridge:

Sounds like me this time last year. No buns from August to March, then having all of them die this summer.

Now they don't want to breed again.

All I can say is hang in there.

I feel your pain. I have only had 2 litters this fall and 5 out of 6 died one the first one. 3 that I thought were going to kindle did not. It must be a bad fall for raising rabbits!

:yeahthat: What they all said, hang in there, a lot of people have trouble breeding in the fall. I had a line that wouldn't breed in the fall but come March they were ready!!! They made up for lost time and would breed through June. :good-luck:

I've been having issues with misses, but no deaths. Well...I did have one proven, sucessful doe decide to have them outside the nesting box for no apparent reason. One doe paralyzed herself and started chewing into her hoohaa :/ (Put her down) Just some strange occurrences. I think I'm just starting to get back on track. One of my best homebreds seems to be having the most issues to get kits from. She was rejecting to breeding yesterday, so hopefully something this next time she will finally have kits.

It seems when you aren't planning for much, there is no disappointment, but when you are breeding for something to have kits ready at X date, that is when the issues come up!

Hold in there!

We were not having any luck with breeding, tried the ACV in the water for a month and now we all of our does due in the next few days (minus the doe we bought 2 weeks ago and the young junior doe).

We'll know in the next few days if I have any babies. If I have any more weird deaths, though, I think I'll just put them all in the freezer, disinfect everything like crazy and find new stock. Already started shopping around, but not much out there right now. I might need to get back to my original plan anyway. I really do have too many rabbits and need to get back to just the 2 trios.

My youngest babies (about 4 wks) are still doing good and seem healthy, it just wasn't a large litter.

One of the biggest reasons for not breeding during this time of year is lack of adequate daylight. Rabbits need 14-16 hrs of daylight per day for their pineal gland to think it is the appropriate time for breeding. It will take at least a week of the supplemental lighting to see any difference in the rabbits willingness to mate. If they ARE breeding but not taking, that can also be part of the same "winter slump". Because their pineal gland also triggers sex hormone secretions, they won't ovulate like they should in the winter.
