Hey guys and gals. Rose seems to be slobbering and has some sort of sore on the back of her neck. She is eating and drinking normally so far. It is very hot here. I have sprinklers going on the roof of the barn, ice bottles in the pens and fans going.

Here is a pic of the slobbering. It was like this before I put the frozen water bottles in the cages. She drinks from a bottle, no open containers in the cage :

I got her to raise up here:

What could I be looking at here and what do I need to do to treat her?

Suggestions appreciated.

My first thought on the sore is a parasite. I have no idea on the slobbering. Her teeth look good.

First, the slobber is from her being too hot. You need to get her cooled down or she will have a heat stroke.

Second, she has fur mites. Have you checked her ears for ear mites too? She needs to be treated with something like Ivermectin to kill off the mites. Some folks dust with DE but with it being so hot, I don't think it would be best right now.

I already sent someone after ivomec. Should be here in a jiffy. Im gonna check all the other rabbits for mites.

I soaked her down and am rubbing her ears with an icy rag. She is doing better.

To be honest Im a little ticked off that I havent caught the mites before now. I handle her daily. I got to do better

__________ Wed Jun 27, 2012 4:53 pm __________

Rose has a 9 day old litter. What if anything should I do for them concerning the mites. So far none of her kits are any of the other rabbits are showing any signs of mites.

Hey, it happens! Don't beat yourself up over it, just deal with it and move ahead :) If the kits are nursing, they will get the Ivomec from mom's milk. Not sure if that is recommended, but I have given it to mine when nursing with no ill effects. I am sure someone else will chime in on this....

I went through that about 6 weeks ago with a doe I had from 6 weeks on, she was 10 months when she had this happen. I did the ivermectin and also sprayed kitten flea spray on her cleaned her cage really well with water and some bleach. she got better really fast . Good Luck !!!!!

I used Ivermectin with a doe about 20 days pregnant, continuing the regimen after the kits were born (3 doses, 10 days apart). She and the kits did great, and I never saw fur mites with the kits. :)
