So today has been alright. I tried to pick up a doe I re-bred to practice palpating that missed and she was still continuing her rampage. I decided to test her with the buck I bred her to and she rejected him. I just put her away cause she's just grunting and all that fun stuff at me. Atleast she's not biting.

I noticed my buck must of gotten some of the gatorade powder I was adding to their water on the hot days, on his fur and it was making it all gross... so I took him out to spray him down with a spray bottle and towel dry him... well his stomach hair was pretty knotted up so in the middle of grooming that out, I noticed his penis look strange. I even went to check my other bucks to make sure it wasn't out of the ordinary. He's just a year older than Hulk, but maybe it's old age? Something else?

Then Hulk must of gotten something in his eye and I washed it out. It a bit irritated though :(

There was crust and a bit of eye muscus in that one eye... anything I can put on it to help? He is always closes his eyes when I pet him so it's not something I noticed right away!

The pustules on the sheath make me think venereal disease.

The oozy eye is not good either. Could be Pasteurella. Not Hulk! :( There is a lot of discharge matted into the fur. I would clean it up with chamomile tea if you have it- you can hold the tea bag over his eye to loosen the gunk up, and if you have a flea comb, comb the rest of it out. By removing all of the discharge, you will be better able to monitor the output. Tea is good for his eye, but if you have any opthalmic ointment you could treat it with that. Use a non-steroidal version in case his cornea is scratched- steroids inhibit healing.

I hope I am being paranoid with the gloom and doom, and that there is nothing serious going on.

I've read that rabbits can get venereal diseases in there eyes/nose/mouth because they groom themselves down there. A cursory google search says maybe a penicillin injection? Might wanna check out your does, too.

Yep, rabbit syphilis likely....they groom their genitals and then wipe their face with their paws and get it in their eyes, nose, mouth. Penicillin....and don't try to breed him with anyone else till after treatment. Have you bred him to anyone lately? You might wanna check out your does....

Thank you Mamma. You always have to plan for the worst with rabbits. I talked to the Rex breeder that has been helping me and he's recommended I start him and the does I bred him to on penecillan shots:( I'm going do what I can for Hulk. This is so frustrating. :( I've also notified the breeder I got him from so they have a heads up.

**update**
His breeder just let me know that apparently they have gotten it checked out several judges and they have been told the same thing: Pimples from heat and humidity.

I don't know if I go ahead and treat it. Go by what they say? They are actually really good, friendly people that are in good favor in the rabbit world. I'm scratching my head on this one.

Is that area at ALL crusty? If it wasn't for the eye issue, I would say maybe just pimples....but with that crusty weepy eye, it makes me nervous.

I would treat with penicillin- Hulk too. Maybe he has it, but it is affecting his eye. I'd take an STD over the dreaded "P word" any day!

Also, I don't like the idea of popping those pustules. That will spread bacteria around. Diatomaceous Earth is very drying- maybe you can powder the areas with it.

What is the dosage for rabbits?

Sorry for such short responses. Just finished treating Hulk's eye. Washed out the crust and then put on ointment . I'm glad he's such a sweet buck. Never gives me a hard time and let's me take care of him. Just to make sure everyone is ok I think I'm going to do a round of penecillin. I know my rabbit loving friends won't know quiet how to handle them if I left them to put ointment on my rabbits junk. Not the best time for this to happen :( Our family is leaving Saturday for a trip, I need to make sure the gang will be ok before I have to leave. My mom also suggested that I powder everyone. It blew my dads mind that rabbits can get STDs

So I got shots of my does genitalia....I don't think I see anything "off" on them. They were both bred to Gandalf (the buck with the genital pimples). One is on a litter going on about 2 weeks and the other missed. They have only been bred here. Seal doe was only ever bred once already with Hulk. The REW was a first timer with Gandalf.

Well I just finished treating everyone. Talked to a few breeders and I was recommended 1/4cc for 5 days. Unfortunately, I'll be leaving to FL Saturday and I know none of my friends will be up to the challenge of giving 5 rabbits shots for the last two days. It's understandable and I wouldn't want there to be any accidents or freak out while I'm away. I treated Gandalf,Hulk, Aurora, and Wensicia. All have seem to taken to it well. I'm interested to see what the result are with Gandalf since he has the pronounced pimples. I also treated washed out Hulks eye and treated with ointment. Thank goodness I had no screamers!

It was a pain just to get the pencillin alone :? The lady at my local horse/tack store kept telling me if I've talked to my vet (My rabbits don't go to any vet regularly? It's not like horses.... you have a vet on call pretty much at all times) and didn't have the needles anyways. I can't ever go there without her going on and on and on. I had to make a second drive to Tractor Supply + traffic (Over an hour to get there)....but the people there were so much more helpful, explained me how to administer the shot, get the bottle room temperature, and gave me the correct needle.

Good luck treating them! I havent found a vet i trust with my rabbits yet. The only reason my bunny even survived wry neck is that i treated him myself with ivermectin. The vet didn't even understand why i wanted to treat him with it.

Thanks :) Isn't it sad that our local vets know nothing? The vet I used for Jack is a nice guy but didn't pick up his personal cell for emergencies when I actually had one with my dog a week or two ago! Plus he's so far away :( I feel good about the treatment that I'm going to give my rabbits. Rabbit Talk and other breeders are the best help there is. Everyone is knowledgeable, just got to filter through all the opinions and find what fits the situation best. I should have bought more needles so it looks like another trip to the Tractor Co after work tomorrow.

Wishing you all the luck with the treatment. I got really lucky when researching Vets. My Vet put himself through college raising meat rabbits. And wants to learn about the fancies I have. Finding out he's a rare breed.

This is the dose I just finished giving to Thumper. He tolerated it well, and cleared up his eye by the time I gave him his fourth dose. Naturally, I still gave him five doses.

This is what I saw for dosing 300,000 units/mL:
Rabbits weighing LESS than 2.50 Kgs (5 1/2 pounds) receive 75,000 units (.25 cc)
Rabbits weighing MORE than 2.50 Kgs (5 1/2 pounds) receive 150,000 units (.50 cc)

1 cc = 1 mL

Tegan (former vet tech) gave an excellent how-to in her tutorial: how-to-give-a-subcutaneous-injection-t8690.html

She also said that it isn't necessary to let the whole bottle warm up:
Also, you don't NEED to let the Penn G come up to room temp...but it makes the mixing easier. Just shake the bajesus out of it for a while...and then let the drawn up dose sit in the syringe to warm up...no one wants to get injected with cold solution. post85668.html#p85668

Good luck with them, Peach! :clover:

Time saving idea: let the bottle warm up once, draw a quantity into a syringe, and then just allow the syringe to reach room temp. when needed.

Well today is day two of treatments. Hulks eye is looking a ton better and so is Gandalf's junk :) The pimples are still there, but not as pronounced. The bigger ones are obviously the ones that are taking a bit of time. I think the results have been good with 1/4 cc a day. The doe with her kits seems fine too. Tomorrow morning will be the last day of treatments. I'll be leaving for a trip so I'll see what the results are from 3 day treatment next Saturday/Sunday. Now I don't want to leave! The rabbits are just part of my daily routine. It's going to be so strange to wake up early and not have to got feed, hay, and water. Guess it will be prime time to do some salt water fishing since the house we are renting is conveniently located a little walk to the beach and has a dock on the property.

So thrilled to hear that Hulk's eye and Gandolf's junk is doing so much better.

Hope you have a enjoyable, safe trip, and catch some fish.

Karen

Thanks Karen :)

Hulk's eye is completely cleared up today and Gandalf is also making progress. I gave them both one last round antibiotics .5cc ( Going by a 1/10cc per pound from some other instructions I received. Since they are both 6lbs I just gave them an extra kick from the 1/4 cc I was giving them the past 2 days. I gave the two does 1/4cc just to be on the safe side even though they weren't showing symptoms. Happy, healthy bunnies :) Now I feel a lot better about leaving today...had to visit RT before I leave. Go figure! :D

I know the breeders. I have seen and talked with them at shows for years. buns always looked good and health. I've bought a total of 13 rabbits from them, the latest being yesterday. none have show signs of any illness or bumps, pimples or pustules.
