HELP.! Doe gave birth to only one dead baby

I just recently got a Flemish giant named Loki. I had no idea she was pregnant because our male is kept in his area and she's kept in hers, (I'm trying to bond them before I just let them be together and also have them both be of breeding age. Anyways I guess she had gotten pregnant anyways sometime when I would let them run around the house well living room kitchen area I baby gated the hallway off. Anyways last night I woke up because my piggy had gotten up and went over to Loki who was in the doorway of our room, it made me curious why Penelope was making so much noises and checking on Loki so when I got up and looked she had something dark hanging out of her.! I had no idea what it was and her being pregnant or having a baby was the last thing on my mind so I thought maybe she has string of got into something and it's stuck to her but as I got closer and really examined it I realized it was a dead baby. That she was giving birth and it wasn't out all the way I panicked because I had no idea what to do. I stayed up with her because she's my baby and I was scared of her dying too.! After an hour passed and me reading all over the internet (this page was a lifesaver hence why I joined lol) I decided to run vegetable oil on her area and the baby to help her push it out because I had tried pulling it out but it felt so weird to me and I didn't want to hurt her or damage her. I gave it a fairly strong tug. About an hour or so after I had rubbed that on her it finally came out a whole baby, just dead. It was only one though, is that normal.? Can she have just one baby.? I have no idea what to do in this situation so if anyone can give me advice on this, what I should do, how to help her I don't know, anything, just anything at all will help. She's acting normal, she has been this whole time even when it was hanging half way out of her. She's running around playing, eating, drinking water, and sleeping normally. I never noticed a change in her personality or activity. She usually is always with me or in my eye site because she follows me around the house.
I'm just worried that she wont be ok or she'll die from this. I don't know I just am new to this whole rabbit breeding thing and have never heard of or seen a bunny give birth to a dead baby and it be stuck halfway out for a while, and it was only one so I hope that was the only one and there isn't or wasn't any more. Please fill me in on advice or things to do just anything at all will help.!
I've been searching for a rabbit organization that'll help with vet bills like injury or illness, how they do it for dogs cats and pigs they'll pay a portion or all if you can't pay for it, but I haven't had any luck finding one that funds rabbits. Any one know of any organizations that do.? We can't afford much in vet bills because we just moved into our home, I just moved here to the US from Barcelona not too long ago so we are broke between those costs, citizenship, and everyday bills. Ugh this is so sad and it would happen when we have no money's verreaction:

If the kit is out now, and she's not experiencing any bleeding, she's most likely just fine. There may be more kits inside her still, but they are less likely to become stuck after that large first kit. I think the worst is probably over for you, so it's time to relax, and make sure bunny has privacy and a secure place for nesting.


(It is possible that she could pass more dead kits. There wouldn't be much you could do, other than just be ready and clean them up. )

:welcome: Glad you found RabbitTalk when you did. Zass has given you good advice . . . I just wanted to second it and say a few words of encouragement.

Your rabbit sounds as though she is fine. Birth is a normal event and most rabbits handle it well. If a kit is larger than normal, it can get stuck, but the chances of it harming the mother are small. I think this was harder on you than on her!

I do recommend that you do not let the rabbits out at the same time if you are not ready to breed them. Mating can occur in seconds and if you take your eyes off them at all, you would not even see it.

A word about vet for rabbits. There are some excellent rabbit vets out there, but most do not really know how to treat rabbit ailments. It is often totally different from dogs or cats. They are also frightfully expensive and many of us cannot afford it. We learn to treat our own rabbits for minor and well-documented illnesses--and in some cases we humanely end a rabbit's life if it cannot be helped. You will find a great deal of knowledge here to help you.

There are a couple exotic vets in Vegas, which should be reasonably well versed in rabbits. I'll try to locate their specifics. What breed is your male? Flemish also? I'm sure Homer could weigh in, but Flemish can have small litters and birthing issues.
If your male is kept intact, you won't be able to let them run around together. It's just not feasible, unless you're constantly ready to have litters. It happens fast, and its completely natural for them to breed often, even after she's pregnant, while she's nursing, etc. A breeding program requires separate facilities. If you want to keep does together in a communal area, you could, but they could fight, and injure each other, especially as they mature.
If you plan on adding Angora to the mix.... it may be just a bit too much to handle safely for everyone.

Thanks everyone, our male we had neutered about 3 weeks ago so up until 2 2 1/2 weeks ago they were never allowed contact unless it was through a baby gate. I figured since he was fixed and healed no stitches and everything he was fixed no baby chances the vet also had told us to keep them separate for a week at least to let him heal to reduce chance of injury to the wound things like that they said and after that they're fine to be together so why did she end up pregnant if he was neutered.?! I'm so confused I've been reading all over online and this book rabbits for dummies and some say a doe can still get pregnant up until a month after the buck is fixed and some say no they're fine after they're fixed. So I'm lost because we don't want babies the person we got her from said it was a doe and we had a doe so to me it's ok because it's 2 girls well we got home and then realized it's definitely not 2 does so we made an appointment and got our male fixed because the vet told us they don't recommend spaying the female they only fix the males which I found odd.! So I didn't think babies could even happen or else I wouldn't have let them be together at all.! I appreciate all your words and advice because this breeding all of that never crossed my mind, I do get bunnies in pairs because they are social animals and I feel like they're happier with another little friend by them, but if I knew from the start it was a buck and doe I would've avoided this whole situation and gotten one fixed before it was brought home or kept away from the others until it was fixed, because breeding is one thing I do not want to do lol.
I'm searching for a good rabbit vet, one that works with them frequently because after this scare I'm literally scared as heck like what if something else happens, I dunno I'm just a worry wart they're my babies and I would lose it if I lost my babies, I treat them like my kids, they even have their own room lol and the last spare room will be for my angora babies I'm searching for. I'm just debating on making 2 bunny runs outside now because I'm scared and don't want any more accidents or anything at all to happen lol. In the mean time I moved their cages apart one stayed the room it's been in the other I moved into the other spare room and went out and bought another cat condo scratch thing because they're room had a large one with a little activity center we built in there, so Mochi can have a cat scratch thing for him as well until I get him checked and make sure he's cleared and ok to be with Loki, I separated them yesterday night as soon as I realized what was happening.

I've kept her with me all day so I can watch her and keep an eye on her to make sure she's safe and ok. And all day so far she's been normal. Last night was a long night for us I stayed up with her till 4am about to make sure she's ok so I think we are both pooped now lol. She's laying in my room in her bed with a pee pad under her so I can see if there's blood or anything alarming. So far no blood no nothing. My husband gets paid tomorrow so we'll take her to the vet this week.
Again thank you sooooooooo much for all the advice and help. I just freaked out because they're my babies, and babies have never been an option so it all was such a shock. You all are lifesavers, all 5 flavors lol.

As for the stuck kit, she'll be fine. If there was a problem you'd see a LOT of blood that wouldn't stop.

Smaller litters seem to be part of the territory with these gals. Mine usually have 6-8. Right now that's whites and light greys. In all these years I've only had one Fawn that always had 11-12 each time. Was it her or a really good buck? :hmm: Guess we'll never know. That was many years ago.

Yea she wasn't bleeding much at all there was barely in her home and barely any on her fur thank goodness.! So is it wait a month after the buck is fixed to allow him around a doe or is it ok to let them together after he's fixed and healed.? I feel as if a month is a must wait now because he was fixed :cry_baby: and it still happened to my baby. I'm scared to put them together again lol because I definitely don't want any babies I'm perfectly content with them as my children and want another bun so to be able to give them the best and spoil them babies are a no no lol I know nothing about that part so I'll leave that to all the bunny breeding experts lol. Thanks for the welcome and the advice.!! I'm happy I've found this site not many people to talk to about bunnies in my life so this makes me super happy. I always need advice.!

I'm new to this site so I have no idea if I quoted this correctly or even did it right lol. But I am trying to post pictures of my 2 babies. It tells me the file is too big so I'm trying to figure out how to make it smaller lol I'm not tech savvy so this is a challenge lol. Thank you for your help earlier I was freaking out. I know you have tons of experience of breeding and bunnies and their babies so what is best keeping the male separate from the girl for a month after he is fixed, or is waiting till he's healed from the surgery ok.? I asked the same question to the person above as well because I got Mochi fixed, I thought we had both does but when we brought Loki home it was a shock to see that he definitely wasn't a girl so I immediately separated them and got him fixed and the vet said just wait until he's healed keep him calm so he doesn't open the wound and the common do's and don'ts after the procedure and once he's healed it's ok to bond them and allow them together. I asked him if it was safe because I wanted no babies I love buns but breeding isn't for me lol that's a lot of expenses and expertise that I'll leave to the experienced like you and others lol. I would have never allowed them together if I would've known it's a no no for them to be together until a month has passed after his procedure.
Anyways thank you for the great feedback. I'm always in need of advice and suggestions you can never know enough. How are your new babies doing.?! You have so many new babies now huh.? Awe such sweet little blessings I commend you for doing that because it scares the crap out of me and I couldn't handle it lol not for me ohhh nooo lol. When was he neutered? If its been two weeks and he seems healed, they'll be ok to be together, if the neutering was done correctly. I've never heard of a neutering not working, but there is a first time for everything.

Posting pictures are best done through a third party site, like facebook, or imgur. I admit I don't post many pics, because I just copy the address of the pic from my Facebook account, and repost it here using the "img" tags. Someone more tech savy than myself can probably tell you something easier.

We call it the "sex change fairy" and yes, rabbits can be tricky, so two does can sometimes be a buck and a doe, and many people have been in your situation because of it. Especially because does do sometimes mount other does and bucks as part of establishing a social hierarchy. That said, your buck may still mount your doe. As long as he's neutered, and as long as your doe doesn't react poorly, it'll be ok, it just may be unsightly.

My new babies are doing great and growing quickly. I'm waiting on a couple more litters, we'll see what happens there, but I'm in love with the little ones. They're always so much fun. But, yes, the worry of losing your mom and / or the babies is constantly in your mind. It's hard on us every time we lose anyone, and it seems like things can go badly at the drop of a hat. There's absolutely nothing wrong with not wanting to put yourself through that stress.

Anyways, it is normal for rabbits to bleed a little post-delivery. And... just so you know, just because she had one dead baby doesn't mean she doesn't have more in there. I've had rabbits kindle over a period of three days, some kits alive, others not.

if she's done, she's done. if the buck is neutered no more babies as long as he hasn't had access to her. Bunnies are normally just fine with the whole birthing process. If you haven't tossed or buried the babies and stuck them in the freezer, snake/dog food/cat food people would be delighted to get those babies for their animals. Keeps them from being wasted.
