Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and have been soaking up knowledge for some time. Now I need you help. I found this cut on My new 10 week old buck's foot this morning. (see attached pictures) The cages are kept on a screened in porch and there was no evidence of a wild animal on the porch. The cages are new and I could not find any sharp edges per se, though I suppose the ends of the urine guards could be at fault. Anyhow, I am not sure what to do for the little guy, does anyone have a suggestion? Should I take him to the vet or put something on the cut? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. ~Mike

keep it clean, let it heal, keep the flies away from it. Should heal up just fine.

My guess is the urine guard is at fault. was probably resting deeply, foot slipped under it, woke up and pulled it out therefore getting a cut. are the urine guard tight to the floor?

They are not tight, but they do have tabs that keep them from coming up more than 1/4" though that is enough to get the side of a foot under. I will press the tabs through harder so they stay tight to the floor. Anything in particular I should use to keep clean? Iodine?

Thanks for the quick response.

I would get a little bottle of Blukote and spray the cut every day. I have a doe that rubbed her foot raw when I put her in a dog crate for a grass pen. I just dabbed it with the Blukote and now she's fine. Yes, I also moved her into a real grass pen, too.

Iodine is fine, too. You can smear a little triple antibiotic on it if you want to, but probably just cleaning and iodine would take care of it. Keep a close eye on it. :) Should heal up just fine.

And welcome to RabbitTalk! :D
