Soooo, Cujo was dispatched today due to weight loss. He is a silver fox rabbit. He was 7 months when we purchased He was weighted at 8 months. He was just under 8 pounds. He was 9 months this past wk. When weighed he was just over 6 pounds. The other rabbits purchased w/ him are dealing with pasturella symptoms. I figured the weight loss was due to the same reason since he was still eating. Beyond the fat in the cavity being a little more than I have seen in other rabbits I did not see much. The liver was about the size of my hand.
dead weight(after bleed out) was 6 pounds. used a fish scale
His dress weight was 3.85 used a kitchen scale
pelt weight 1.30 used a kitchen scale.

I was impressed with the dress out weight but disappointed that he was so old and so light. He wasn't spiky down his spine but his hips bones were prominent this past wk.

Do you see anything that would be cause for weight loss?

__________ Sun Jan 27, 2013 4:10 pm __________

*dressed weight does NOT include organs

It took about 20 min to get him skinned. That *could* be the reason for the gas. I put him back on pellets and grain a few wks ago when I really noticed a drop in weight. He has also had probiotics daily.

I like the way you opened the chest cavity to get the organs out while still connected. I'll do that on a few to try it.

Looks a little gassy. Is that a block of dried poop next to your fingers? Looks clumped together instead of formed pellets.

I noticed the gall bladder too but have noticed a large variation in mine also. Some are almost empty. Guessing it depends on the timing of last feeding.

Yes it is some were pellets, then some where rectangles, then some were pellets again through the lower track.
I had to put him in the freezer. I couldn't keep looking at him in the fridge. Guess I need a little distance before a meal.

everyone has to remember.. when a animal is dead.. and if you dont open it in 5 minutes or so.. it start to have gas in there. very normal.. Longer you wait more gas there is going to be.

Thanks for that bit of info. My dh and I did several rabbits today and the last four had gassy intestines. (He skins, I clean.) I was beginning to wonder about their health! All of the livers looked good, though, except the last one had one lobe that was paler than the others and a bit grayish around the edge, so we discarded it. Better safe than sorry.

Is it bad that I think the liver in the 3rd picture looks quite appetizing? I don't even usually like liver and I have never even tried rabbit liver!

I love the way you opened up the carcass and were able to show all the organs intact...great picture quality. Sorry I can't help with your questions.

I plan on trying it when I start sending some to FC. I have never even wanted to try any kind of liver after trying fried beef liver and onions as a kid  but suddenly I am actually "wanting" it. Go figure.

May be your iron is low....
I was afraid to eat it cause he had been so sick. I didnt feed it to my dogs b/c they can also get pasturella. The garbage got this one. It was really heavy tho. I was impressed.
