(GRAPHIC) Deformed kits wtf happened here?

Sometimes it's just bad genetic match ups. When I was breeding NZRs I had to import some bucks from an out of state breeder (the local pool was too small after 5 years) and I had nothing but problems with those litters. No deformities, but suddenly litters went from 10+ went to 5 or 6, internal organ failures, stuff like that. Once I removed those bucks from the breeding pool, the litters went back to normal. Sometimes, it's just not a good match despite best intentions.

Those kits looked like hippos (at least I think that's the right term). But that's a dwarf rabbit thing, which makes me reallly wonder what was in the genetic make up of those mutt rabbits.

Are you sure the Nz white you brought in was clean and didn't carry vent disease because it will cause every problem your having and does will past it onto offspring at birth.

I will agree with Zee-Man regarding the possiblity of a teratogen--I also considered such a thing. I live near a superfund site, and the soil is badly contaminated. Eating anything out of that area is not reccomended. However, I also think Preitler is right that it would be likely a fairly wide spread thing, with known issues in the area--just as I am aware of sites of industrial toxicity in my area, such as the area around Hanford, the Duwamish, etc. It would be a good idea to know the history of the property you are living on, and a soil test for toxins might be a good idea also if the problem recurrs with other animals.

I wouldn't be too sure that "farmland" implies safety. Check out this article about the teratogenic effects of Roundup.

I agree Zee-man, old "farm land" makes me suspicious too. I also live in Canada and many farmers continue to use scary chemicals especially in mono crop farming. Even if this was a one off with your doe I would check the soil. You never know!
