When I decided to get Rex last year the breeder sent me a picture of the ones I was going to pick up. One was a beautiful yellow.

It was gone when I got there  so no yellow Rex for me.

However, I crossed one of my bucks I have produced to my American Chinchilla cross doe I got TWO beautiful yellow kits?!?

So, where did the yellow come from?

The buck is broken dark brown and the doe is chin colored. No other yellow kits have shown up with Rex to Rex breedings but is there a chance of one showing up or is it from the Chin cross side?

I believe the "yellow" is a fawn which is a chestnut/castor (like the broken brown father) that has two non-extension genes which wash out the black colour from the fur of agouti based rabbits

These yellow kits got one non-extension from their father and one from their chinchilla mother.

Frosty, tort and sable point are also non extension colours so any rabbit who has produced these colours in their litters must secretly carry the gene like the broken brown buck and chinchilla doe

So if I KNOW Energizer has it, do I just breed him to every pure Rex doe and cross my fingers it shows up in one of the nest boxes?

My does are castor, broken blue, broken opal, red eyed white and one the same color as Energizer, that odd brown speckled with black color.

Breed him back to a "yellow" daughter and you'll have a chance at yellow with rex fur. Breeding him to your other Rex may or may not depending on what recessives that carry. Can you post a pic of the color? I'd love to see it.

I just wanted to add that if I'm understanding Dood correctly and this is non-extension Castor or "Red" in rex. That they might (probably) would be disqualified on the show table. I believe the standard for red rex calls for a deep red color.

If your not showing, however, and just like the color then go for it.

My computer is broken and am using my mums one so, once again, I cnat post pictures. It is a pretty color though so I really want it in my herd.

How big a problem are random guard hairs with a cross to pure rex? I have a problem with that in some of my pure Rex already.

__________ Wed Mar 04, 2015 9:04 pm __________

Two of the color showed up in a pure Rex nest box. Guess which ones got out when I was gone?

*Sigh* At least I can try again with this buck and doe pair.

:( Yep, they did. Four kits got out at the same time (only 2 weeks old) and two stayed right under the cage but the other two must have wandered through the fence that the cages hang on.

The dogs are on the other side of the fence so not even a speck of them remained to be found.
