Yes tailwagging down here in Australia (and some other places as well) we have to vaccinate yearly against VHD because the government keeps releasing it to try kill off feral rabbits.

I posted on the Columbus House Rabbit Network FB page last year, sure, I'd like a chocolate rabbit for Easter-- a Chocolate Rex  -- it promptly got deleted..... yeah, I sit on a couple of those pages-- just to see what is going on.....

vaccinations for rabbits?
What do you do when your pet gets sick?.... These bunnies being referred to are easter pets.

I defiantly wouldn't vaccinate a sick rabbit!!!
medication shots is not vaccination. they are not the same and there is no vaccination for rabbits in the USA that I know of.

In spite of where it came from, or who it came from, I think it's quite appropriate for this time of year. If it deters even 1 person from randomly buying an Easter Bunny for their child, without doing their homework, just because they are "cute and cuddly", and "Easter appropriate".....it's a good thing. :)

Animal Rights propaganda- its whats causing so many problems here in the US right now, people have been brainwashed to believe that rabbits are pets only, which they are not. There is not a 'rabbit overpopulation' just a lot of empty crockpots, and hungry people. That may sound harsh, but I know I'm saying what others here are thinking. Its ads like this that are creating a mindset that is going to take our rabbits away from us. So no, I don't think its a great ad.

What do I do when my pet rabbit gets sick? I treat them myself, because so few vets know diddly about rabbits, and then if they are doing poorly I put them down myself and bury them. Their prey animals, more fragile than predators like cats and dogs, not to mention that one vet bill can be 3 or 4 times the worth of the rabbit.

Um, if they use the title free Easter bunnies and then promote chocolate bunnies instead, shouldn't they have to offer a free chocolate bunny? I could go for some chocolate

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, chocolate. ;) I could go for a Chocolate Mini Rex.....

Aaaaaaaaaaaaanyways.

My dad was reminiscing about his childhood the other day, and how when he was a kid, every Easter there would be a cute little fuzzy white baby bunny in his shoe. :) They'd have a wee bunny to play with and cuddle for a few days, then it would disappear. ;) When asked, my grandmother would tell them that the bunny's family missed him and wanted him back.

Turns out the local dairy also raised meat rabbits and each year she'd "rent" a junior for a few days. They never minded...having someone else pay to fatten up one of their rabbits for a few days, sounds like a deal to me!!!!

The idea behind it is a good one. It's targeting people who are looking specifically for pets. If you're a pet owner of a rabbit, you can expect 10 years of everything they mention. Although some of the information there is just wrong when it comes to overpopulation and the implication of only one role for rabbits in society, the main point is a good one for who it's targeting. If you're not ready for the responsibility, don't buy a rabbit for a pet. There's nothing wrong with that by itself. Despite my strong disagreement with the House Rabbit Society on a number of issues, this is one where they are doing something that other rabbit breeders are not. They put out a very nice campaign and over the years have effectively lessened impulse rabbit buying on Easter. If we could get rid of the extraneous crap in the ad that would be nice, but the main point is still good and I still respect them for putting forth the effort to put it up.

As for vaccinations, there is an extensive RHD vaccination program in commercial rabbitries in Europe.

I can't respect anyone who uses deception to strengthen their agenda no matter how nice their campaign may look.
this ad was put on a American CL there is no vac for rabbits in the USA so that is deceptive.
to make people think that others who don't "vac " their rabbits are bad.
it is all "how to boil alive frog"

I try to treat all my animals first too. I have treated my boa's respitory infection, I got a little cornsnake worm free(she was full of roundworms when I got her), I treated a lizards mouth rot and now working on his malnutrion and calcium deficieny.

I use to work in an animal shelter and can tell you the Vets method of putting rabbits to sleep is not pretty. The animals are injected in the stomach, since a vein can be hard to find. They don't just "go to sleep". It takes time and is very painful to watch.

I can respect someone who got results on a problem issue when no one else was doing much of anything about it. If you are incapable of recognizing the good that your opponent is doing you will never be able to compromise on the areas where there are disagreements.

Oh, and I only mentioned the RHD vac when someone asked "vaccines for rabbits?" Not normal, but more prevalent in large scale commercial rabbitries. Pretty much large scale commercial any species requires some type of vaccination.

That is horrible. Then again I know some shelters gas tanks overflowing with cats and dogs so I guess I'm not shocked. :( Maybe I'm wrong but a bullet to the brain stem would be less cruel.

I'm lucky, I know a few very smart folk when it comes to medical issues with animals, plus I have this forum to fall back on.......so I try to treat my animals myself, too (the exception being my kitties, who have chronic issues that only my vet can treat). So far, so good. :)
