This weekend I'm going to purchase a bale of timothy/alfalfa/grass hay. The seller said that some has been rained on and some hasn't.

Of course I want the DRY stuff, but how can I tell what is what at the time of purchase? I can't pull apart the bale. Is there any easy way to tell? I need to keep it pretty-much baled when at home so it will be a few months before I can see the middle.

Thank you.

OH YES YOU CAN!!! Any self respecting farmer will be happy to help you inspect their hay, maybe not to the middle of a 1000lb roll but a 50lb bale is EASY to open up and re-tie closed

Cut one of the straps, crack it open and sniff for dust, mold and feel for dampness and tie it back up - easy peasy

Otherwise take your chances
