That policy is common, though rarely, if ever, legal.<br /><br />__________ Wed Mar 27, 2013 9:41 am __________<br /><br />IDK where mystang lives, but this county and every one that touches it (Green/Taylor/Adair area) has a lumber yard that will deliver. The one in Greensburg will even deliver for free, but if your order is less than $50(?) you have to wait for them to be delivering something nearby. Maybe a smaller lumberyard will help, if HD isn't going to.

Lowes is usually good about delivering, even clear into the city. But you do have to meet the $50. Usually I cut all of my boars in half to fit into the minivan.

The mention of gun shots in the city reminds me of the time when four police cars pulled up in our yard, banging on the door, declaring that they had reports of gunshots fired. My brother laughed, we don't have any firearms, not even a toy gun. LOL. Sure got our neighbors excited though.

How awful, Mystang!

I am so sorry you lost some rabbits that way. :(

Can you arrange for a delivery from Home Depot so you don't have to use your kids as a lumber rack?

Actually...I hadn't thought about that. Thanks. I will call them and see what the going price is. I think right now I am out of danger as far as casualties is concerned though. That's not saying the dogs won't be back, it's just saying they won't be getting the rabbits unless they grow 6 feet tall or learn to use each other as stepping stools. Plus I have the actual garage as well that I keep locked which I can put them in.

I have started the preparations needed to make the wood shed in the back that closes off the back entrance to the car port and when I get that wood for the shed I will also get the wood for the door. I just needed a push to get the project going. Not exactly the push I wanted but I suppose the push I needed.

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas and support!

I join everyone else in offering sympathies for the loss of your rabbits.

I can only wish I had the Grace to respond with the restraint and eloquence you've demonstrated. May His hand continue to guide and strengthen you. And may only good things come from this sad event.

I'm so sorry, mystang! Hoping you can secure your setup quickly so that it won't happen again.

Sorry about your loss. Might be a good idea to put some rat traps under the cages for the night. A friend of mine has a way of hooking up mouse traps to fishing line. When a animal trips on the line the trap closes onto some caps. The bang scares away the animals. I would move the rabbits though so they don't die of heart attack.

I actually have rat traps under their cages already but they are for the actual rats lol, all were flipped that morning meaning the dogs had hit them. I have 4 total but have been thinking of upping the number.

Try to set something up that will make noise for a period of time, so that the dogs will be frightened off rather than just momentarily startled.

Hmm.

Depending on the size of the dogs, it would have to be something very loud. You could shoot a gun right next to the head of my shepherds and they might turn their heads to look at you. Falling, clattering objects might stop them for a few seconds.

Depends on the breed of dog, too. Our Aussies are complete sissies when a gun is fired, and if any dogs should be desensitized to firearms it would be ours. The Queensland/Aussie mix could care less.

A booby trap might help. One method used for dumpster-diving dogs is to put a bait item on top of the trash with string attached to the bait and a piece of cardboard. Stack empty cans on top of the cardboard, and when the dog takes the bait, the cans will clatter down all around it. It works best if the owners then race in and exclaim in horror at what the dog has done, so I don't know how effective it would be with stray dogs.

My Chihuahua is desensitized to gunfire. One of the "benefits" of tagging along on several hunts. I know of many big dogs who balk at the sound...so it is based not on size or breed, but exposure. I have a friend who is having difficulty getting her protection-dog-in-training to ignore gunfire...but her pet dog is totally cool with it. :p

Now, as for the cages being torn open...my dad's dog is small for a GSP, he's under fifty pounds, and he has torn through wire cages before...heck he's torn through a chain link fence TWICE now. Jaws and determinatin. :(

Tell that to the Aussies. We have a shooting range on our property and they have heard thousands of rounds fired. They're pansies, I tell ya!

LOL well...nobody ever said how MUCH exposure...yours just haven't reached their limit to attain tolerance. ;)

I think I know which dog it was as it came around during the day a few days before the attack. At that time I didn't think anything of it but then I saw it running around loose yesterday too. I believe it was a hunter's Labrador. Had the hunters color on and everything.

If it is a hunter's dog, I would suggest that you call animal control and complain to them ... they will probably want evidence, so if you can video the dog at large, they can give the owner a ticket. In some communities, the owner will also be reported to the Wildlife Department who can then revoke their hunting license for that year or longer.

Otherwise, I my case, killed the dogs, called animal control and filed a report with them ... and just a couple of weeks ago, I found the tag from the female that was in the pen slaughtering the rabbits, and I have seen the littermate to her in a yard north of me.
