Is it just my rabbits or do black rabbits have softer and silkier fur. I have a litter of lionheads and the 2 black ones feels softer than the other 3.

Could it be possible that they are double maned and are just to young to really express it yet? Might contribute to the feel. I personally don't think there is any correlation between fur color/ texture, but I have only been dabbling in the genetics for a little while ~ about two months or so, so I'm not the one to ask really. Wheres dood? :D

The answer is.........maybe. ;)

I know that certain colors of Mini Rex tend to have better coat density and quality than others, which impacts how it feels. Maybe Lionheads are similar?

All of my whites tend to have the best coat and type, it's a real shame that I don't like them as much. The otters are second. The Castors are the worst, even worse than the Chins. They come from someone who has worked Otter to Otter for generations, improving and making that line rock solid.

A big reason why color seems to bring certain traits, is because of the popularity of the color. Whites, blacks, and colors like Castor in Mini Rex and Otter in Rex and other breeds, are the most popular, are bred more, and more improvements made on them. Then there are colors like Tri, Red, Harlie, Sable- that people don't work with as much, so those animals don't always carry good fur and type.

You can tell at about 3 days if a lionhead is DM, it will have bald patches on the side where the wool will come in.

I think genetics plays a role, my Black SF buck has great fur and his son who is Blue totally has his fur.
