As most of you may know I have ej and probably e in my gene pool one from my Rex buck and one from my Masked Steel Doe Mitka. I've been using the nomenclature ES(ej or e) for Mitka since I didn't know for sure which she carried and which the buck carried.

However, I think I have it figured out. Since Mitka is ES (ej or e) Her chinchilla daughters by my Silver tipped steel buck, would have to be E(ej or e). E from the buck and (ej or e) from Mitka. Any other combination and they would have been steel (or possibly black). If they were ej they "should" show some bridling somewhere most likely on their bellies.

Is my logic sound?

So, off I went to check one of the does. I don't see anything in either doe that would indicate ej. I just looked at the older doe from under the cage as she is due to kindle on Tuesday and I didn't want to mess with her. So here is the younger one. Who btw really really needs to go to freezer camp but she soooo pretty.

Like most of the E-locus genes, "ej" doesn't like to follow the rules

You can get harlequins with so little brindling they look like fawns, let's call them "masked harlequins" and several examples have been posted on RabbitTalk in the last few months, so I'm not surprised your "Es ?" doe is leaving you scratching your head :)

In my magpie rabbits I am getting fewer and fewer visual harlequinized chinchilla ("Eej") as I breed them to my "EE" rabbits. I *should* be getting 50% but it's closer to 10% or in some litters "0%"

I'm just thankfull that test breeding to a frosty "outs" the secret japanese harlequin carriers

Bleh, I really thought I was on to something....   I guess I'm stuck with breeding his daughters back to him and seeing if I get any harlequinized rabbits... I hate waiting
