so, even though i'm not getting a rabbit for at least a year, i decided to go on amazon for a shopping list. i got a LOT of toys (majority of the 45 item cart).

hopefully this is big enough, i want to give my bun as much space as possible, i plan on upgrading to free roam around room. 9 square feet.

Ditch the shampoo, rabbits don't need baths unless they have diarhea and even then a light misting with vinegar and water and a cloth is a better option. Feed, hay and cage size are all going to depend on what size/breed of rabbit you get.

Why are you buying food if you are not getting a rabbit for a year? The food would be old by then. :?

2) Check a feed store or the paper or even Craigslist for Timothy hay for sale by the bale. It's bound to be cheaper. I've gotten that stuff before (both Oxbow and Kaytee), and it's always been crummy. :/ My rabbits didn't even like it. They prefer normal grass hay over that stuff.

3) I'd just get a bag of bunny food from Wal-Mart or a feed store. I've never seen rabbit food cost that much, I really doubt it's worth the price.

4) I'd check a feed store for pine pellet animal bedding. I use wood stove pellets (4$ for 40pounds) for my cats, and it works MUCH better than the paper pellets ever did for the rabbits. My 3 indoor cats can pee on the pine pellets for a week and it won't even be wet, but 3 days of use for 1 bunny and it was smelly and wet and clung to the box. 3 days for 3 bunnies and the ammonia burned my eyes. It's not as bad of an eyesore when I toss it on the manure pile, either.

9) The open sides would probably scare the rabbit more if it were to travel. Plus it could get pee all over the car, with those low sides.

10) The pine pellets really kills the smell of my cat box, so IDK... lol

11) If you keep it clean, I don't think it would smell. I'd hold off on that one till you see what it's like at least.

13) Probably for a while.

14) My rabbits never really liked dyed toys or jingle bells or even store-bought sticks. There was a hoop toy (Dr. Foster&Smith; Hoop for the Stars) that I quickly realized was a NO-NO! for Sebastian. She perches on things like a bird, and she almost hung herself with that thing.
I stuff hay in toilet paper rolls and hunt down tasty fresh sticks for bunnies to play with instead. ;3 I put treats inside a paper towel roll and put hay on either end sometimes, and they LOVE it! lol! You can also buy a bunch of sisal from a hardware store or farm store for a fair price, and pet-rabbit-toys.com sells toy parts so you could make chew and throw toys yourself!

Yetti liked to roll coconuts across the floor. I had a corn-husk mat once, it lasted maybe a week? Sebastian went ate it...as well as all the other toys given to her. :roll: Sticking a treat on top of the cage or wedging it between the bars up high was more amusing than most toys I could buy my rabbits.
But, that's all based on my own experiences. Not all rabbits are like mine, I know. lol

I'd wait on the food until you actually get your rabbit. You need to know what the rabbit was raised on first before you decide what you will switch too. A good breeder will give you a supply of their food so you will have time to get your own supplies.

Ditch the shampoo. Rabbits don't need baths. Very rarely if at all.

And toys, lol, we spent a lot on store toys and guess what, they are in a box untouched by the rabbits. My rabbits love toilet paper rolls, paper type egg cartons, sticks from the backyard (hardwood). Lot cheaper.

Regarding the harness, I have one and it's still in the bag. I was going to put in on my Flemish, but am finding that he's more intelligent and he's learning voice commands. Plus lots of practice picking up. Also we have an outside run which makes it very easy. But if you want to walk your bunny on a leash, the correct harness is important.

Looks like you are really doing your research. Good Luck with your search for your rabbit. A year will fly by and you will enjoy that bunny experience. It's truly different and very unique experience.

1. Look for a dog pen instead if you want to give more room, you want height too. Do you know what breed you want? Also, you will want a wire dog kennel at first or some sort of cage to prevent pee/poop from getting on your floor. maybe to keep the young rabbit confined if you are wanting to litter train which i recommend you encourage if hes indoors

2. buy by the bale! You would be surprised how much you throw out sometimes.

3. Don't buy food yet. Not a kaytee fan if your looking for healthy food. they need alfafla based pellets first year. avoid corn or surcrose or any by-products. Purina has come out with 10lbs bags for pet rabbits, i always liked their rabbit chow. Dont feed timothy based until after a year, or 16ish months for the large breeds

4. find equine pine. or tractor supply started carrying a store brand of wood stove pellets.

5. dish is fine. but may still dig food out, dont fill to rim

6. Petsmart has a large litter box for 5$ i think, I replace mine after a year due to the amount of bacteria plastic absorbs, so no reason to spend so much

7. I have a slicker brush, a rake, and a greyhound comb i use on mine all found in dog aisle. it depends on breed what kind of brush you need, longer haired breeds will require more grooming

8. Dont wash your bunny, use a wet rag if you need to clean a mess off.

9. Get a kennel with solid sides, just scare the rabbit more to see how high they are and other animals poking their nose at them. Dont need fancy, just a regular cat/dog one

10. vinegar and water, dont need anything special.

11. those are fine. get quick-stop unless you keep corn starch around

12. That works, i use dog harnesses that snap at their back, makes it easier to put on

13. Those should work, but a determined rabbit will chew through. Keeping them from reaching the wires is a better idea.

14. Toys are good. Cereal boxes and toilet paper rolls and cat toys with bells in them are a favorite here.

Try to find cheaper versions of what you need, that way you can put money back into a vet fund in case something happens.
