Sounds like lots of us are doing our first butchering sessions this weekend - I guess it's what all of the cool kids are doing!

So, I had helped butchered a few rabbits when in 4-H years ago, but this was the first time in a long time, and my husband had never done it. We followed Bowbuild's procedure of bonking them then dressing out on a table with lots of water around. It did help that our first ones were REW - we really don't like the demon-eyed bunnies. Now they're cooling their heels in the fridge, and rabbit is on the menu in a few days!

Two American Whites, at 9 weeks, 5 lb. 4.2 ounce and 4 lb. 15.5 ounce after feed withheld. Ended up with 2 lb. 14.6 oz. and 2 lb. 11 oz. dressed carcasses.
Now I have to decide if I want to go ahead and process some Blues tomorrow; they are a bit smaller but still approaching 5 lbs.

Congrats!

Those are great weights for 9 weeks! :p

Now I can't wait to breed my Am. Blues!

Based on the above, I think you better invite Coffee over for that fine dining :p

Lol, I have no idea why that triple posted, but I'm always up for letting someone else cook me a nice rabbit dinner!

LOL! Marinea, I saw your post earlier and I had no idea WHAT you were talking about since Coffeenut had already edited the post.

It is all clear to me now! :p

My other American line (the ones that are all blue, all the time) don't grow quite so quickly, sadly. They are all still around 4.5 lbs. at 9 weeks. However, there's lots more of them - that doe had 9 for her first litter, and now 12 for the second. I think this next time I might try breeding her to my Champagne buck to see if I can bump the growth rate up a bit.

And we're thinking of making rabbit leg confit... duck confit is one of my favorites!
