Thursday morning, everyone looked fine, including my big, blue Siverfox doe. (11 months) She was munching her morning hay like everyone else when I left for work.
When I got home, all was normal with the buns except that Rikki was a very cold and stiff, dead. She had eaten her pellets and hay... drank some water... It looked like what ever happened was very sudden.
I thought about opening her up, but wouldn't know what I was looking for unless it was something very obvious. I've also been very busy and didn't want to keep her around until she softened up, so I just dug a hole.
I have a theory and was wondering what you guys might think...
I breed her on the same day as my other SF doe, and palpated both a few days before the due date. (Almost 8 weeks ago) Rikki didn't feel as "full" as the other, but I know I felt all kinds of wiggling things inside her. The other doe kindled, but Rikki never did.
Could she have retained dead kits that long without any visible signs and then die that suddenly 8 weeks later because of it?

Everyone else is fine as far as I can tell. They are hungry, active and obviously enjoying the "winter" weather that we are finally seeing in Florida. I received an order of Bene-bac yesterday, and will start treating them today and see if it helps with a minor cecal abundance issue that comes and goes.

Anyway, I'm trying to decide whether I want to find a replacement for her, (Maybe a NZ or two.) or keep a kit or two from the two litters I have growing. My small herd has become pretty eclectic.
I should probably have stuck with my original plan to have all FWs. The lone buck that I ended up with is an awesome hunk of muscles! :bunnyhop: ...I'd have to find some closer, though. I'm not doing the 10-12 hour trip again, any time soon. (Never, EVER try to pass through Orlando during rush hour!!! :x )
Thanks for reading. ;)

I have no real idea about the death. But personally I'd keep a doe or two from the litters you already have. Buying a new animal and bring it into your herd could open a door for a disease to slip in.

Just my thoughts,
Cathy

Yeah... Quarantine would mean yet another cage and nowhere outdoors that's sheltered and isolated to put it.
I have an 8 week old Havana that's already almost as big as her mother, and a 6 week old SF that weighs almost the same and is the largest female in that litter.
The look like good rabbits for a home meat herd to me. :hmm:
