Hope this topic isn't too tacky. :x

But I was just wondering how much everyone pays for their feed and what the average price is. Right now I am getting $15/bag for Purina show feed.

I was paying $14.95 for the big bag of Jones rabbit feed (16%), lasting about 2 weeks... and now that I'm cutting the pellet feed out, the bill will be $8 for the big bag of barley/wheat. I have to get rid of the pellets, I find my buns are getting gassy when I open a new bag, even though it's the same brand everytime. Do you have any problems with Purina's feed?

I haven't had any issues with purina , though I haven't had rabbits very long either :).

All of the people I've gotten my rabbits from feed the show formula as well.

Back when I fed pellets, I gave the rabbits Purina. When I emailed for an ingredients list, I found out that here in Ontario they were using animal tallow in the feed. I didn't much like that idea and that is when I decided to switch to a pellet-free diet for the buns.

Purina's ingredients list seems to vary from area to area and it is quite possible that they have changed the ingredients since that time... It's been about 4-5 years since I've fed pellets. But it might be wise to check it out first.

We spend $13 for 50lbs of horse pellets, $10 for 40lbs of BOSS, and $8-10 (depends on time of year) a 60lb bale of organic clover hay. Actual rabbit pellets are like $16 for kent and $18 for nutrena when nutrena is only a 30 or 40lb bag. During fall and winter straight grains are around $8/50lbs but we can't store enough to make it through the rest of the year.

Lone Star pelleted feed, 16% protein for $10.95/50lbs and Calf Manna $24.99/50lb but you can get a $2 off coupon from Tractorsupply.com

I use Floradale 17% and it's $13.00/50lbs

The other choices I have like Land o'Lakes, Purina, Masterfeeds, Shur-Gain all go for around $15.00 a bag for 40lbs and I wouldn't touch them with a 50ft pole.

We switched to Nutrena, and pay $16.99 for 50 lbs. We had been using the cheap $10.50 per bag feed from the local Farm and Fleet, but got so tired of all the dust and fines in that brand! We don't have many options for feed around here, and since I absolutely refuse to support Purina, and Land O Lakes brands, we'll pay extra for the Nutrena! They do good on it.

Ugh you should see the country lane stuff we have here. I would rather not keep rabbits. Purina is absolutely wonderful stuff compared to that. It starts with grain by products, forage by products (I'm not even sure what that is), some type of corn... I don't remember much after that because there wasn't a named ingredient that wasn't hulls or byproducts except for corn. I grudgingly used their chicken and gamebird feed until we stopped keeping poultry before the new feedstore went in. We were so happy at first when we found nutrena at the new store which was the only other option for 50miles but as our rabbits multiplied it became so expensive and we got the small feedstore to special order the kent before giving up on rabbit specific pellets altogether.

I am thrilled to be able to read this thread,
it will be a big help to me shortly.
The last time I picked up my Rabbit feed I was told
"This is the last of it" Only seven bags.
They are switching over to another supplier/brand. :(
I will know in a week or so what the price of this new product will be.
Obviously a bit MORE than what I had been getting.
I will be looking into other places to purchase from.
I will have to take into account travel/gas prices.
When I find out what I am doing I will post the outcome.

I understand Purina is getting rapped pretty badly here, and maybe deservedly so. It's the only bulk feed I've found around here so far. I don't have space to store and mix grains. I pay ~$15 per 50 lb bag of Purina Complete (green bag), and I have no troubles with it at all.

Miss M, I made the switch from Purina to Pen Pals on a tip from several people at the last show. They swore by it, and then several people on here and another site did the same.

I believe the Purina AdvantEdge feeds are much better than the performance and complete blends which were sold when I got out the first time around, but I looked at the Pen Pals as an upgrade over what the Purina was for me. If Pen Pals doesn't work for me, I'd have no problem switching back to Purina.

All of that would go straight out the window if anyone within 100 miles of here would carry the Oren Reynolds formula feed which is milled by Farmer's Feed Mills in IL. That is an EXCELLENT feed!!!

The original Oren Reynolds feed formula, as quoted in Bob Bennett's book, contained antibiotics. I personally don't feel that routine medications are a good idea. I don't know if Farmer's Feed Mills in IL includes the antibiotic in their version of it, but I suggest anyone planning to use it should find out in advance.

Otter, if you don't mind me asking, what have you been feeding up to this point?
It was/is a Meat rabbit 18% pelleted feed.
My guess is that they are opting out because
too many in my area were using it instead of
the more pricey brands. I believe they are switching to either Purina
or Nutrina [SP]. I have located a new feed store within a short driving
distance and am working on a possible deal to purchase my feed there.
I am still doing a bit more research. I really hate to switch feeds when
what I have been using has been working well.
It may be for the better since I have been adding a few grains to the feed.
I guess a change is gonna come!
