eye color

As I'm sure most of you can tell, I know very little about genetics and colors. I have a question and im not sure if there is an answer or guess.. but ill ask anyway

How common is it to get a bunny with red eyes when mom and dad have dark eyes?

Mom is all black and dad is white and light brown with a little bit of dark brown/black. This litter gave 3 black and white brokens and 4 light brown and white brokens but 2 of those brown ones have what looks like pink or ruby eyes. (Not sure yet I just know they aren't a dark color) the lighter kits are so light that at first I didn't see the markings, they just looked pink so I thought all white.

Does this give any insight as to genetics/colors? Either with the parents or kits? Once they start showing more color, I'll post some pics

Pictures? Are you in Europe? It almost sounds like lutino. That is the only mutation that I know of that will cause pink/ruby eyes in a brownish rabbit.

Are the coloured markings on the "light brown and white brokens" only on the nose, ears, tail and feet?

Nope, I live in CT. But born and raised in VT

I'll get pics in a few seconds. The color looks tan/beige. But there isn't much fur yet lmao.

There eyes are still closed? You can't always tell eye color that way.

Really? I could always tell with baby rats and mice who was going to have pink/ruby eyes or black. I thought it would be the same, because they are so young and thinned skin?

I think I see broken chestnuts and broken fawns, once they open their eyes they should all be brown :cheesysmile:

That is so weird, I would have assumed red eyes. So much inexperience on my end. Thank you both for the info and help

Sorry I was on my tablet and decided to come to the computer and expound on that answer.

Judging eye color from closed kit eyes can be useful if you're trying to tell REW's from red/torts/frosties etc. However, it isn't anywhere near 100% accurate.

Eye color can vary as you can see when looking at lilacs, blues, chocolate, and blacks rabbits. However, judging by the colors of the darker kits in this litter I'm going to guess all the kits in this litter have brown eyes once they open.

Kind of glad about them having brown eyes. Never cared for the pink eyes in any species.

4 days old of cuteness!!!!!! The light ones have some dark fur around their eyes like their daddy thumper. Are they considered tris?

Starting to look more like blacks and black Tort this means that Thumper is most likely a a Charlie tort = aa B_ C_ D_ ee ENEN

These are Rubys fat little cute babies. There are 6 black brokens and one that's lighter, almost like a brownish black. It's superrrrr cute maybe agouti? Chestnut? I have no clue it's just cute lol

Statistically you should have gotten around 50% broken chestnuts, but rabbits are terrible at math :mrgreen:
