I just got home and my dad said "the kits were fine this morning but now they aren't moving much." I go to look, and I see a lot of wrinkly tummies and barely-lukewarm kits. I got them out, warmed them up, and I brought in Breezy...flipped her and tried to let them nurse, but they didn't get much.

I think I discovered what is wrong though. It looks like her lady-parts are infected...I'm not sure if it's vent disease or just a nasty infection from birthing kits, but I think that's prohibiting her from nursing them. I hate to try and hand raise them, the mortality rate is soooo high.

Can a lactating doe be injected with penicillin???? Will it hurt the kits?

I've injected an expecting doe with no issues, but I can't say if it's safe or not...
Maybe a broad spectrum antibiotic will help?

I had to use PenG on a pregnant doe and she and the babies were fine. I'd give it a try!

I know, I'm just saying that if it didn't hurt the kits in utero it probably won't hurt them if they're nursing. ;)

I would give the PenG a try, Kyle... and in the meantime, I'd try a little formula to help keep them from getting too weak. I'm supplementing kits now, and they were two days old when I started -- the youngest I've started. About half the litter isn't getting enough, so I'm supplementing.

It depends on whether you have the time, and whether you want to go to that extent to try to save them.

Have you checked to see if Classy has any milk?

Gave Breezy a shot of penicillin, and mixed up some formula for the kits...I think they might be okay. :) Going to see if she'll nurse them tonight. If she can help keep food in their tummies, I will keep them warm and pick up the slack with formula. :)

Thanks guys!!!!!

Crossing fingers for your litter, Kyle. Hope it all works out! Good luck! :clover:

Well, Breezy has been nursing them today, they're looking fine and she's already looking a lot less inflamed...honestly I think she's giving them 90% of their food intake. I'm still going to bring them inside at night or on cold days, in case she pees on them again, but I think the abnormal urination is due to a UTI. :p

I think they'll all be okay!!!!!!!! Even little Runt!!!!!!!!! :D
