Well this is a first... I raise Dwarf Hotots so I'm surprised it hasn't come up before. I have a first time doe who I got from another breeder, she's older than I'd like for a first litter, around 13 months old. She kindled last night, one large malformed kit which was stuck for about an hour before I helped pull it out. (gently with sterile gloves). She passed this kits placenta and has had no other contractions for about 12 hours. I palpated and can't feel any more kits (I think! I hope...). Dwarf does often loose a first litter and other than the size of the kit it was a textbook pregnancy and she did an excellent job nesting and pulled a TON of hair. How soon should I re-breed her? I don't want to do it too soon so as to give her a chance to heal up if there were problems, but soon enough that the narrow birth canal still has some elasticity to it. From my view her vent area looks clean and undamaged and there is no blood anywhere in the cage. I'm sure the kit just got stuck and died since it was a really big single. I'm reading mixed advice of 1 day all the way to a week to re-breed since she's fertile and it will help her milk dry up.

Any advice from my fellow dwarf breeders?

We have Netherlands and I always check to see if the vent looks ok (not tender and swollen from kindling) and rebreed. Usually this is within 48 hrs.

Sounds good, I checked her at feeding time and she looks fine and ate her whole ration. I'll re-breed tomorrow. I could use some big litters, my other doe only had one live from the last litter and I re-bred her yesterday. Guess they'll be Christmas bunnies though I didn't intend it.
