I was wondering if there was anything useful about Dutch rabbits besides being pets.
I think they look really pretty and I like them but I only want to raise useful rabbits.

Dutch make a good meat rabbit other than being generally small if bred to type.

__________ Mon Mar 22, 2010 7:21 pm __________

should add, they have the reputation of being EXCELLENT foster moms.

Dutch are a great utility breed for a small homesteader or the like, from everything I have read and have been told. They have good dispositions, are popular in the pet market because of their markings, and although they are small, they have been described as "meat bricks" (I think Franco Rios coined this). One nice thing is they cost less to feed, and although you won't get as much meat per animal, they have a high dress-out and fine bones. They can also be kept in smaller cages and because of their markings, it is easy to know right from birth who won't make the cut for the show table.

By the by, I am picking up two Dutch does this upcoming weekend from a Dutch breeder/judge in another state that came recommended, so I guess I will know for sure about all of this soon enough. :)

Best of luck,

Lauren

__________ Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:18 am __________

Just wanted to update this thread- I picked up the Dutch does from a very nice breeder that has been raising Dutch for longer then I have been alive at the show last weekend. I am very pleased with this breed so far for looks, size, utility, etc. They feel very meaty under their coat for their size (much more so than my other compact breed), they have nice dispositions, make a 24 X 24 cage look very roomy, and they don't eat a ton either. My hubby loved them right away, too- they are pretty rabbits, seem to have a lot of character, and I think that we will enjoy them quite a bit.

I really like your Web-Site Farm Girl, I hope to get my first Dutch Rabbit's at a Rabbit Show coming up In Western Iowa "Council Bluffs Iowa", Your Black Buck Emil Is a Beauty, And your Does CB and Haddie are Beautiful as well, I found a Dutch Breeder here In Town that Breed's Chocolate's also Blue's & Black's, But I'm gonna wait untill the Show to talk to other Breeder's In my area before I buy any Breeding Stock, I dont plan on Showing Rabbit's so I'm hopeing to get a good deal on some that are not going to make it to the Show Room but still some well Bred Dutch,

Dutch make excellent home meat rabbits, and they are fantastic foster mothers because they are...well, good mamas! The mismarked ones sell nicely as pets. You can't go wrong with a Dutch!

I did alot of research on different Breed's of Rabbit's and the Dutch Rabbit's are the Breed I decided to go with, Small In size "Less Feed" "But still a Good Meat Rabbit", Easy to handle, And Great Mother's ! I cant wait for the Rabbit Show comeing up In Sept., I got real Lucky I went to Craigslist and did some searching and found a Dutch Breeder right here In Town with some Beautiful Chocolate Dutch Rabbit's for sale at $15.00 each from Show Line's, I think there 8 Week's old I'll be picking these up this Weekend,

Not sure If there Does or Buck's yet but I'll find out when I get them, And Hopefully at the Show I'll find another Breeder and get a Doe and Buck from them and start two Chocolate Dutch Breeding project's,
Then I got Lucky again on Craigslist cuz I needed Cages and found a Great Deal on some very nice 4 section cage's with metal deviders, I gotta make about a 1 Hour drive to pick these up though at $80.00 Each or 3 for $200.00, Which Is a great deal cuz he paid $130.00 Each for these so I'm gonna buy all three then I'll have lot's of extra cage space,

On the different color type's of Dutch Rabbit's like Chocolate's Blue's & Black's, If you Breed a Chocolate Doe & Buck do you get all Chocolate's ? Or Black Doe to Black Buck get all Black's ? Or a Blue Doe to a Blue Buck all Blue's ?

I raised Dutch for years.they are great mothers.Lots of people raise them for meat.

There are some very good dutch breeders in the state of Missouri, as well as some of the surrounding states. It's a very competitive breed, and it's imperative that you start off with solid bloodlines and cull them tightly if you want to enjoy long-term showroom success.

I have had dutch for 14 years. i didnt pick them they picked me but now I will never have rabbits without them in my barn. they are the best all around rabbit aside from wool. they make good meat animals they sell as pets awsome casue people like the oreo look. also if you have snake owners or breeders around dutch are awsome one they are cullable at birth casue of markings so you can sell *pinkies* or you can grow em up a little and sell pets and snake food and grow em a little more and have dinner or sell em for someone elses dinner. they are awsome rabbits personality wise and they are the best lol "If it aint dutch it aint much" if there is anyone who wants to talk about dutch or has questions or would like help aquireing stock pm me and ill help ya i know breeders all over the country (for the most part) and have lots of experience with the breed.

Dutch are one of the Big Five, so not the greatest breed for someone starting out in showing. Better to start out with a less popular breed and get some success and experience under your belt first. They are a good small meat breed, they were used in creating Florida Whites, which are a really excellant small meat breed. I must say I'm not crazy about the Dutch temperament, have run into a lot of nasty ones, that kind of ruins it for me. I've seen a lot of very aggressive Dutch, seriously like full attack remove part of your anatomy bad. That won't work here for me, with a 4H child none of the rabbits can be aggressive, even our Florida Whites, while skittish are not aggressive. I will admit a nice one is a thing of beauty. I have seen pictures of the harlequin dutch someone is working on, very pretty, and I like the torts as well. Chocolate to chocolate will always produce chocolate or lilac if the rabbits carry dilute. Black to black can produce black, tort, blue and chocolate, lilac if the genes are present in both rabbits. Blue to Blue is a dilute to dilute breeding so you can only get dilutes, which would be blues or lilacs. When buying your Dutch for meat pick heavy well developed rabbits, I have seen smaller less meaty lines out there.

Actually I think temperament depends on the breeder you get the Dutch from and the lines. My older sister had a Dutch she used for showmanship for many years she was in 4h and when one died she got another one both were great tempered. And we had Dutch for a couple years they had great personalities we only got rid of them because we had too many breeds.

All the dutch I've known have had wonderful temperaments. It's the mini rex that I see the most variation and some lines of completely insane violent rabbits. You can probably get insane rabbits in any breed so knowing the breeder and seeing their adult rabbits is important if you really want to know the possible future temperament of their young rabbits.

I have never met an ill tempered dutch as long as i have been breeding. I have seen or had many ill tempoered mini rex though.
