I think I read somewhere on here that Pellets actually make the kits grow faster than the mothers milk. Is that true and if so wouldn't that mean that the sooner the kits were able to be weaned the faster they would grow?

kits need milk they will eventually be more hungry than the calories the mother can provide so they will be weaned when they are ready

my NZ weaned themselves at 4weeks and when they were born they would gain 20g to 30g a day in weight from about 60grams
when they were eating pellets and hay on there own they would gain 1 or 2oz a every other day

Thanks Lizard, I wish I had a scale to weigh them now since mine are 4 weeks today and that is when I was going to wean them. I'd just like to know how much more they grow in another 4 weeks.

Depends on their genes, if they're from fast gaining fast growing stock they'll grow more, faster than stock bred for say colour or pattern where growth rate isn't necessarily a priority.

They will grow faster on pellets. Some wean early for that reason. Some also wean late especially if it's not a big litter because the longer they drink milk the less pellets it takes to get them to butchering or selling size. Everything has it's pros and cons.

Well, out of the two litters that I have going now 1 litter is just got weaned cold turkey yesterday since the mother keeled over dead....darn rabbit, she was the best mother rabbit I had too. Anyway, the kits had already been chewing up the pellets for a while so hopefully everything will be ok.

Wow, sorry to hear about your doe. Hope it wasn't anything that could be passed to the kits and other rabbits. Wishing you luck with the orphaned kits.

If they are 4 weeks old and eating well they should be fine. Unless the doe had something contagious. I hope it all works out for you. Try giving them oatmeal Old fashion oats for a while too. It is easier on their bellies.

Nothing contagious unless being stupid is contagious. She broke her neck when I was holding her. Didn't even give me time to get her in the football position. Worst part is I didn't have time to process her or save her hide as it was JUST before I left for church so I was already in my church suit. Stupid *grumble grumble grumble*

WOW.. I guess that was quite a struggle. .. You might think of upping your protein... anything that is 15 percent is a low grade pellet with lots of corn in it. I would change it to a differnt brand. If you give hay it will lower the protien down. Unless you are giving alfalfa...It will also save you on pellets :)
