So I'm selling a doe and weaning her kits a bit early, decided tonight to remove them from mom and see about plugging them into another litter.

Doe one.. oh.. new babies... cool I can deal. The babies snuggle in. I think.. I'll take two of the biggest kits from doe one and plug them in with doe two.

Doe two... DEATH DEATH!!! KILL THEM ALL!!!!!!!

Oh my... quick rescue... all kits are with doe one....

Stupid rabbit.... why do I like breeding quirky hollands??? WHY????

Give me a calm quiet meat doe ANY day... especially when it comes to fostering....

I find lions are great for fostering. Every time I've fostered onto a lion doe(3 or 4 diff does now), they've all acted like doe 1. Just a couple sniffs and then they practically shrug their shoulders and hop into the box to feed.

Can I tempt you into starting Lions? lol!

NO, no lions... I've rescued lions badly matted... just not going there....

but easy fostering of older kits...that I love...

No success here. Rex doe tried to kill them all after putting in two. JW doe shoved the foster out of the box to it's death. If a doe has a problem, them I've just got a problem.

How many other times have you fostered or attempted to foster with Rex does??

I've never done it at all with rabbits .... but have with other animals to varying degree's of success & failure. I don't think its a breed trait , more of that individual animal's mothering instincts and temperament.

Not Rex as a specific breed, just them as an example because they are the primary breed here, produce the most litters, and the only one I've had to foster kits from. As the first ones here, and the most numerous, most of my examples with be Rex.
They also are the most temperamental breed here, not nearly as friendly as the other three. That is symptomatic of being a hard to find breed.
I have only been able to try it a few times. My does don't breed in groups. I get one here and one there, never got more than two or three ready in one week, and the time I got three bred, they kindled 3-4 days apart. Neither the Rex, or Wooly was interested in fostering kits. The Holland took in two to make 7. The last time it was necessary, I just culled the litter, and eventually culled the doe. Their litters are so large 9-12, I can see that they would not be interested in taking on any more mouths.
