Ok. I raise rabbits for meat. But my daughter, Izzy, is wanting a snuggle bunny. We've talked and she understands that it would have to be a doe, that the rabbit has to earn her kept, and that her cage has to be all wire. Now here's the tricky part, her bedroom is about the size of a shoe box and the rabbits we raise are NZWs. SO, in order to have her new pet inside on a permanent basis she would need a 18''x24''x48'' wire cage with a catch tray. Way to big for her room. :x

Could a rabbit raised inside from 2months old to 6months old do well going back outside to live?

yes. Won't have a problem with that at all.

You might even want to give her any of your potential keepers and let her spoil them up before sending them back out to the barn. :)

Something I would suggest is not making the change from indoor to outdoor when you're having temperature extremes. Ideally the indoor and outdoor temps should be close so that they have time to acclimate.

Izzy comes down to the rabbitry and plays with Taco. He's my newest buck, and she hugs and loves on him every chance she gets. :x :p   He on the other hand isn't quite as excited about the affection.

__________ Mon Jan 04, 2016 7:50 pm __________

That is something I thought about. But Izzy room doesn't get nearly as cool as the rest of the house when we have the window ACs going. Push come to shove I guess we could move the bunny outside before the AC is ever turned on. :?

Thank you both.

Our first doe, Pearl, was very stand-offish at first. Bunny-Wan Kenobi (then about 6 or 7) would go out onto the porch, pull up a chair, open her cage door, and lean into her cage and talk and play with the hay, take pictures and videos of her, pet her, etc. He spent great amounts of time with her. After a while of this, she really sweetened up. :) He was irrepressible. :p

I make a habit out of housing likely keepers with Mucky.
The "human to rabbit relations specialist" around here.
Just for a few months while they grow out.
The kits learn to mooch treats, and that attention can be something desirable, since Mucky just LOVES any kind of petting.

The thing is, kids can get pretty upset when their "for loving on" bun turns out to be a poor mother, or poor producer, or "just isn't quite as good as these other does."

You might as well just go ahead and get a nice little house pet bun... :D I see that Pepperoni has some velveteen lops in the nestbox... ;)

We've talked about what would happen if the doe is a dud. She seems to understand. Earlier we had Taco 1 and Taco 2 and allowed them to grow out for a while. After an eval on them Taco 1 became quesadillas, and Taco 2 became just Taco and is now waiting his turn at the ladies  Izzy loved on both equally and enjoyed the qesadillas too. :p   Being a teen has some perks, :x   not many but some. Every time she gets angry with the cat or dogs she ask if me can eat them. :x    Not that we would eat them, but she knows were meat comes from and has helped with the butchering. Fingers crossed that she keeps that kind of maturity up.

Thank you

Was? :p You really didn't think I was going to let that go by did you?
