I'm considering trying to sell what I don't eat yet retaining the hides .... Figure posting the following on cragslist (misspelled intentionally) might do the trick ?!

Meat rabbits / Rabbit meat - $20

Meat Rabbits , sold live $20 , butchered at no cost - I retain the hide.

Typical carcass weighs in at 3.5lbs.

Retail price for whole rabbit is between $9-$15lb, your cost is ~$5.70lb.

Steroid , antibiotic and hormone free.

Contact by E-mail only.

Otherwise I've been giving away the excess to family & friends .... but that doesn't pay the feed bill. This also eliminates any potential live sales to cover feed costs.

I put contact by email only because I don't care to deal with .... well , you know.

Do you think this will work & will it get flagged ?

Very nice.

Post it in Farm & Garden and you should be okay. My rabbit meat ads haven't ever been flagged... but they are posted in Bakersfield, which is an active agricultural community. I doubt it would go over very well in, say, Hollywood.

I think it's a great idea, but be prepared for emails wanting the live rabbits. :)

Ooh, can I borrow this?

I don't see why not ....

So far so good. Had several responses , none wanting to buy live ones yet ....

One guy did ask me if I would butcher his rabbits in exchange for the hides. I told him I would if they were a fur breed ... wont waste my time on Cali or NZ butchered at 8 weeks.

Have three potential customers lined up. I posted it last night.

I thought so too. Sales is all about making people think they are getting a great deal.

In this case , I think ~$5.70 is a very fair price.

as long as it's legal where you live, sounds good to me. :)

That's the rub....not legal in Texas. I mean, you "can" skirt the law by selling live and butchering after, but you will be skating on thin ice legally and I would not actually put those words in the ad. Leave that part out and tell them when they contact you.

Skirting the law was the intent of the wording "Sold Live" .... How would you word it then ?!

__________ Tue Apr 07, 2015 9:19 pm __________

Well , the add worked as intended. Sold all my excess and didn't have any undesirables contact me at all which is a bit of a surprise. Pretty much covered the feed bill , have a freezer full of meat & kept all the hides.

Two of them said they'd take 2-4 each time I butcher. Might not have to bother with running an add again as that's about all the "leftovers".

Ramjeet : I live in Houston and I do sells my extra NZ (only live rabbits for feed cost recover ) in Craigslist and most of the time they go very fast.
