critique my jersey wooly!

I got "joseph" a little while ago but yesterday when I was brushing him I found that the sex change fairy had come :lol: so "joseph" is now Jolene..... well anyways I think shes pretty and the breeder who sold me her said she looked just like his dad who was a sucessful show rabbit.....but I'm relativley new to jersey woolys so I dont know about the colors.....so I would like you to tell me what color you think she is and also if you think she is a good show rabbit.

How old is she? It's harder to critique wooled breeds by pictures because you can't tell what is under the wool 100%

I would like to see more mass to the head (They aren't called "mugheads" for no reason, and much shorter ears I would be worried if she is still fairly young about her going oversized. She looks like she has excellent length to her wool and decent texture. I can't really comment on her type because they are posed sitting up, but she looks like she has a long shoulder/midsection.

I'm not on the computer that has any pictures of my Woolies on it but I'll see what I can dig up as a reference to what I'm talking about:

For a head on a Wooly I would look for something more like this:

Ears:
This is what balanced ears look like, they're short open and well furred.

I can't find any pictures of one of my Woolies in a proper pose at the moment but I'll keep looking.

Yes, that's how they should pose. The five "upright" compact breeds - Dwarf Hotot, Jersey Wooly, Holland Lop, Netherland Dwarf, and Am. Fuzzy Lop, will naturally pose like this if they are built properly. A very good example of any of these breeds won't need much poking or prodding to get them to set up.

ahhhhhh now I feel bad I was just posing my mini lops and then when I was posing her I kept on pushing her down
saying "quit standing up!"

:lol: I did the same thing with my first holland lop
because at first I thought he was a mini lop so I'd yell "YOUR NOT A HOLLAND LOP!" at him because he kept on standing up........Im slightly embarrased now...

well I have to say the old lady raises jerseys (top breeder in the country) and she looks pretty nice i would breed her to something with a better head if you did though. I cant tell ya the color but ill ask her and tell ya what it is.

hey thats just how rabbit people are in general until you get real big in arba (in michigan at least) then you start getting issues with people somethimes but in general everyones pretty helpful

I would say she lacks mass of the head. She has good thickness of ears, But folded and long. She looks to be undercut in her Hindquarter from the picture. But it could be she is finishing her coat around her Hindquarter, so it looks funny. She looks to have good color.

Since she is still young the mass to her head may still come yet, however I would watch her closely because she is young she is still growing into her ears and she may end up on the larger side.

She does also appear to have a low shoulder but it also could be the way the wool is sitting. To get a better idea of what her body looks like in a picture you can try holding her wool down.

She really looks to me like she's a BUD. If so, she'll go over the maximum weight limit. BUDs are often longer in body, longer in ear, and snipier in the face than a dwarf would be. I use BUDs for breeding though because they throw larger litters and no peanuts.

my lionhead doe is a bud, but boy does she have a great mane!! Plus i have yet to have a peanut. Her kits have turned out nice so far since the buck I use is small. They seem to take after his size but have moms nice mane.

BUD's don't have a dwarf gene to pass on, that's why you don't get peanuts with them. However you also will not always get dwarfs either as the odds for more bud's and bub's are very high. The doe is very cute and will look more balanced when her wool cap grows in and her head pops..

Ok ive raised woolies for a while now and ill give you my honest opinion.
How the JW are posed:
Jersey Woolies are NOT to be posed as a Holland or Netherland Dwarf as they have a rise to show off..they dont pose with their head on the table either. They are to be kind of in the middle of that though..their head should go right into their shoulders and be no higher. So when you look at the rabbit that way it will show off everything that counts. So the picture you showed of the siamese sable is the correct pose.
Now to your rabbit..She does need a bolder head and shorter ear (as some others have said) to compete well with other rabbits..the first thing the judge will see is the head..and even though its not all the points or most points(the body is)...Ive been told by many judges ive worked with and found when judging in competitions that First Impression Is EVERYTHING.
Another thing that will come with shorter ears alot of time is thick ears..her ears are not as thick as id like..its hard to tell from a picture but when the ears are thick they are open, not folded like hers look to me.
I cant really tell you anything about the body from a picture other than she looks short which im a big fan of.
Same with the wool its hard to say from a picture and shes also a baby still..when she molts into her senior coat it will be much better and not so cottony.
