Violet kindled for the first time today! FINALLY! She was not interested in breeding, at.all, but my main (well, currently only) REW buck got the job done even without an active participant on the other end (it was slightly comical to watch). She didn't look overly big, but had a decently round tummy - found 4 dark eyed, light colored kits the first round, then I decided to dig around and see if there were anymore... pulled out two black ones! :? And one more light colored one. I am assuming the light colored ones will be the creme d' argent coloring... the darker ones though?

__________ Fri Jan 29, 2016 11:34 pm __________

Just with day 1 fuzz I can see the orange/creme/fawn (WTHeck color is it that Creme's start out as before the white fills in??) in a few of them, others look lighter so could they be white? The black ones still look black to my inexperienced eye, but I know there are lots of underlying things that can change that. "Self black" means true black, correct? Since the ears are darker, is that what they are? Not sure what the belly of a self black kit looks like so maybe not? I know certain lighter areas mean chin or chestnut, correct?

Wow!!

I am amazed you got fawns in the litter

Is the REW buck from a red/fawn bloodline ?

The blacks look like self black to me but could be agouti steel

Time will tell, hopefully

I can take some more pics now that some color is showing, but that's what it looks like to me. A pale orange, like the mama. I have no idea on the buck... he's a "NZW" that I got from a lady in a neighboring city. Does it take 2 sets of genes to get it in offspring?

I noticed one of the kits has a white line between their eyes - is that what I have seen referred to as a vienna mark?

The light colored ones didn't surprise me, but the black ones did   I really didn't know what to expect though, which I have discovered is the fun of breeding unknown REWs to other random things...

Just googled agouti steel - so pretty! One looked like there might be a hint of lighter hair just below it's mouth, but it was pretty squirmy so it might have just been the lighting. Can't wait to see what they all look like in another couple of weeks! She seems to be doing OK taking care of them... bellies look full, and they are staying covered (although they keep getting moved to the front of the nest box when I would prefer them further back and more protected).

A few pics form today:

The one with the white mark on the forehead - it's actually the rabbit version of ODS's dog, Star  It's not doing very well though, it's belly looks pretty empty compared to it's littermates. I held the mama doe and it got latched on, but didn't appear to actually get anything. It did pee though?? I tried the other doe that kindled the day before and it looks like it might have gotten a little something...

Maybe a little smutty toward the rear end?

Solid color one:

The black(?) ones - direct sun and in my shadow:

Found the little one dead in the nest box this morning :( I knew it was looking puny, but it didn't look all that bad yesterday so I am not totally surprised, but still wasn't expecting it so soon (I would have taken care of it yesterday and put it out of it's misery had I known how poorly it was doing). I know it latched on and suckled on two doe's so I am wondering if it had some internal issues going on that made it unable to eat for some reason. Kinda bummed to lose the Star look alike, thankfully ODS didn't know anything about it b/c it's "his" rabbit that had the babies and it's his dog that it looked like.

__________ Thu Feb 04, 2016 1:30 pm __________

I need to get some updated pic (wow, how they change so fast!)

The lighter colored ones have racing stripes! This is a new color and set of genes, so I have no idea if that's normal, but it's kind of cool looking! The back is darker than the legs and sides, with a symmetrical stripe of darker color going down each side...

The darker ones are NOT self black, but are showing some lighter coloring at the back of the neck, just under the ears. At first I couldn't tell if it was lighting or not, but now it's more obvious. Almost chestnut looking? The belly is starting to look lighter as well. Can't yet tell what the rest of the coat is going to do, still looks very black to me, but it's hard to tell.

Rabbits are a great thing for impatient people like myself! You don't have to wait crazy long amounts of time to see what you actually have! And multiple generations don't take long if you are working on a particular goal in your rabbitry.
