I said it in jest once but I am starting to think I spoke truer than I knew...............

On of my four new Red New Zealand does is sneezing! :(

Have put her and her three sisters into a cage on their own but as they all came from the same breeder, at the same time, all 9 of the new ones were together in a 6ft grow out cage.

All my new reds, broken reds, broken black, broken blue and blue.

Feel like crying right now, I really do.

Uh-oh. :(

Hopefully the others have stronger immune systems. :clover:

I'm about to go cull a rabbit for snot myself. The dreaded "P" continues to crop up since exposure at that show. :(

Snot, is there snot?

Yes :(

Not much, a bit of dampness around the nostrils but if I look up into her nose I can see yellow puss like snot.

I have one hope, both this batch of feed and the hay are dustier than normal so, perhaps, it is just a reaction to the dust.

If she is still snotty and sneezing tomorrow I will cull her and keep her sisters and the other ones as seperated as I can but, as they are all being loaded onto a trailer and driven 8 hours on Sat. any sickness should show up really well with that kind of stress

Yellow snot? I have never seen yellow snot- all of the rabbits I have culled for snot have white snot.

Hopefully yours has something other than "P". Either that, or I have been dispatching rabbits for something other than the Dreaded "P".

I know in humans snot color is a good indication of how bad an infection is (as I understand it, clear snot is not good but not bad...white and yellow is an infection somewhere...and when mine turns green and red, time for the ER!) but snot is snot, I would be worried no matter what color it comes in.

So sorry you've had to deal with this, Gbov. You too, Mamasheepdog. Crappy situation. :( Hope the others are more resilient though!!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

:( I hope it's just the dusty food!

Speaking of snot... lol I rescued a mali uromastyx 2 weeks ao(a lizard) and he sneezes out salt deposits and it's called Snalt lol!

Could it be pollen?? I'm in south MS and he pollen count is incredibly high right now.

If it were me I would separate those showing signs, if they don't clear up cull. And I would treat everyone in the barn with Vet RX for rabbits.

I thought I may have a doe that had "P" but she never had snot, just clear runny nose, vet said allergies to change the hay I was using and start misting her hay and letting it dry before I gave it to her... I quarantined her just in case, and now couple of weeks later there is no drainage at all, and no sneezing at all.

Hopefully its allergies, crossing fingers for you :(

Now that is just total weirdness right there...

It's really bad here, too!

I would suggest that you DO NOT use VetRX nor any other treatment.
All you will accomplish is to MASK the symptoms.
Let it be so you can see if they have been infected,
tis better to know and CULL than to have the remaining members
carry and continue to distribute the problem throughout the herd.
Better to lose a few rabbits than the entire herd.
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

Yes yes yes to that!

The pollen here is enough to dust the cars yellow in a day so tis bad here too so, perhaps its that. They come from a really rural area adn we are a well planted neighborhood so lots of new pollen to get use to.

They are seperated out and I will try to put them on the other side of the trailer from the others but as I will be loading without adult help (hubbs is being angry man over the move  )its anyones guess how the loading will go.

__________ Fri Mar 15, 2013 8:17 pm __________

No sneezing today but still a bit of dampness below the nose of one of them. She is a nasty piece of work too, as I was trying to catch her yesterday she jumped over my arm and, as she went flying over, looked down and lashed down and back with her hind legs giving me parallel gashes on my arm.

She better get all teh way better and tame or it wont mater how nice a color red is

White or yellow snot is not good, clear discharge I still watch but don't freak out. Darn shame Gbov. Any chance of an ammonia problem?

Even if it is "just allergies" I would not knowingly breed a rabbit into my herd that has allergy issues. Now, sneezing from a noseful of pollen is different. But, just allergies? That says "inferior immune system" to me and I would not keep it. Hopefully, she just got something up her nose and will be right as rain in no time!

It is really dirty and dusty here...like, the AIR turns brown kind of dirty...and windy. Right now I have 2 does with clear runny noses. Since I have had 2 I had to put down for white snot in the last month or so, I was leaning towards culling these 2 as well. They are quarantined and I have pulled all kits off their moms early as a precaution so I could cull if needed. Should I wait and see if the clear turns white? How long would that take, because they have been quarantined for at least 2 weeks.

Coffeenut, if it is allergies, they should clear up when the wind changes direction ... however, like OAF says, do you want to breed that into your herd? I do have one doe that is a little sensitive and sneezes during the summer, or in high winds, but her offspring don't show the allergies. I would suggest that you grow some of the kits out to see if they have the allergies before making a decision ... if you have cage space LOL

yellow is probably reaction to something seriously...get a nose swab done.

Then look at what might be going on..

1. ammonia build up?
2. pneumonia?
3. bordatella.

WHITE SNOT is pasturella.
Yellow snot is infection of some sort going on.

Sometimes they go hand and hand but NOT always!

I'm not worried about allergies, dirt in the air would an irritant, not allergies and allergies are actually the result of an overactive immune system reacting to things it shouldn't and that same overreaction is a deterrent to parasites. Really, I'm just wondering how long to watch for white snot before I can exhale. I am not seeing any snot at all now, even the clear runny kind I was seeing, but I don't want to assume they are safe to put back in the shed with the rest just to have it show up later. How long should a quarantine last??? It's been over 45 days since I've got them, about 3 weeks since I removed the doe with the white snot, and maybe 2 weeks since I've seen any discharge in these 2.

I have found replacement stock from a new breeder who I have been in contact with and she has both breeds I want, so starting over is an option and I can get everything I want all at once, but I hate to put down a doe already if I can keep her productive while I wait for some new ones to grow up. By the time they are bred, born, weaned, picked up, and then grown to breeding age...that's a long time to wait for new stock.
